Group riding, passengers and cargo: key rules to remember

Driving in a group

  • Must not be dangerous or interfere with traffic. Never ride directly alongside another motorcycle; talk only when stopped.
  • Staggered formation: leader left side; second rider about one second behind on the right; third on the left two seconds behind the leader; fourth two seconds behind the second.
  • Open road only; single file on curves, in turns, entering/leaving freeways.
  • Passing: one at a time; after passing, leader moves to the left of the lane to open a gap; next rider moves left, passes, returns right.
  • Plan ahead and signal early (leader); beginners right behind the leader; rider at the back sets the pace; slow if the rider behind falls back.
  • Groups that cannot keep the posted speed: no staggered formation; single file, near the right edge if needed; two-second rule is a minimum; split large groups.

Carrying passengers

  • Passengers on mopeds: HTA offence. M1: illegal. M2: avoid passengers or large loads until experienced.
  • Seat big enough for two; passenger footrests; passenger wears approved helmet and protective clothing.
  • Adjust mirrors and headlight with the passenger seated; extra tire pressure per manual; adjust suspension.
  • Slower response: lower speed on corners, curves, bumps; start slowing earlier; larger following and side distances and gaps.
  • Instruct passenger: mount after the engine starts; sit forward; hold waist or hips; both feet on footrests even when stopped; lean with the bike; avoid unnecessary motion or talk.

Carrying cargo

  • Light; low (not piled against a frame on the back of the seat); forward over or in front of the rear axle (behind the wheel affects turning/braking, wobble); even in saddlebags; secured near the centre of gravity, not tied on top of the seat; check when stopped.
