Exam facts

Key facts: Ontario Mathematics Proficiency Test for Teachers (MPT)

Free practice for the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT), the math test that most new teachers must pass to be certified in Ontario. The questions are original and follow the two parts of the test: mathematics content from the Grades 3 to 9 Ontario curriculum, and pedagogy, meaning how math is taught and assessed in Ontario classrooms. Every math question has a worked solution, and every pedagogy answer names the Ontario policy document it comes from.

The MPT was reinstated as a certification requirement on February 1, 2025, after an earlier version was struck down in court in 2021. It is developed and scored by EQAO, and you need at least 70 percent on each part in the same attempt. Writing the test is free and you can try as many times as you need, but each attempt takes a booked session, so it pays to go in prepared.

  1. 1If 1 euro = 1.50 Canadian dollars, how many euros do you get for $300 CAD?
    • A. €450
    • B. €150
    • C. €300
    • D. €200

Divide by the rate when converting into the foreign currency: 300 ÷ 1.50 = €200. €450 multiplies instead of dividing.

  2. 2Simplify the expression 4(x − 3) + 2x.
    • A. 4x − 12
    • B. 6x − 3
    • C. 6x − 12
    • D. 6x − 7

    Distribute: 4x − 12, then collect like terms: 4x + 2x = 6x, giving 6x − 12. 6x − 3 forgets to multiply 3 by 4.

  3. 3Which is an example of qualitative data?
    • A. Favourite season of each student
    • B. Number of siblings each student has
    • C. Time to run 100 m in seconds
    • D. Height of each student in cm

Qualitative (categorical) data describe qualities, such as a favourite season. Heights, counts and times are quantitative data.

  4. 4Which percent is equivalent to the fraction 1/8?
    • A. 12.5%
    • B. 18%
    • C. 8%
    • D. 1.25%

    1 ÷ 8 = 0.125, and 0.125 × 100 = 12.5%. 8% confuses the denominator with the percent, and 1.25% misplaces the decimal.

  5. 5What does Strand A of the 2020 Ontario math curriculum combine?
    • A. Number sense and operations with fractions and decimals
    • B. Data collection and simple probability experiments
    • C. Social-emotional learning skills and the mathematical processes
    • D. Geometry and the measurement of three-dimensional objects

Strand A pairs social-emotional learning (SEL) skills with the mathematical processes. It is taught and assessed in the context of the other five strands, not in isolation.

  6. 6What is the sum of the interior angles of a hexagon?
    • A. 540°
    • B. 360°
    • C. 1 080°
    • D. 720°

    Sum = (n − 2) × 180° = (6 − 2) × 180° = 720°. 540° is a pentagon and 360° a quadrilateral.

  7. 7What should teachers share with students at the start of learning, according to Growing Success?
    • A. Every student's previous marks
    • B. Learning goals and success criteria
    • C. Only the date of the unit test
    • D. The answers to the final test

Growing Success asks teachers to share learning goals and success criteria at the outset so teachers and students have a common understanding of what is being learned and how it will look.

  8. 8Learning for All describes some strategies as "necessary for some, good for all." What does this mean?
    • A. Supports designed for some students often benefit the whole class
    • B. They do not help anyone in a regular classroom
    • C. Only students with an IEP are allowed to use them
    • D. They are optional extras that are rarely used

Strategies such as visual supports or speech-to-text tools, first designed for students with particular needs, often help every student, which is why they belong in everyday teaching.

  9. 9A teacher asks students to explain in words and drawings how they solved a problem. Which processes does this mainly develop?
    • A. Estimating and rounding
    • B. Selecting tools and timing
    • C. Communicating and representing
    • D. Memorizing and repeating

Explaining thinking develops communicating, and using drawings, diagrams or symbols develops representing, both among the seven mathematical processes.

  10. 10To the nearest tenth, what is the area of a circle with a radius of 6 cm? (Use the π key.)
    • A. 18.8 cm²
    • B. 452.4 cm²
    • C. 37.7 cm²
    • D. 113.1 cm²

    A = πr² = π × 36 ≈ 113.1 cm². 37.7 is the circumference (2πr), and 452.4 uses the diameter as the radius.

About the test

About the Ontario Mathematics Proficiency Test for Teachers (MPT)

The Ontario College of Teachers requires most applicants for a general Certificate of Qualification and Registration to pass the MPT. That includes graduates of Ontario faculties of education. Some groups are exempt, for example teachers who already held a general certificate on February 1, 2025, graduates of the Indigenous-language teacher programs at Lakehead and Nipissing, and teachers certified elsewhere in Canada who apply under Ontario's labour mobility rules. Internationally educated teachers certified after the requirement began must pass within two years of their initial certification, or the certificate expires.

The test is made of multiple-choice questions in two components. The mathematics component covers content from the Ontario curriculum for Grades 3 to 9, with some questions to answer without a calculator and some with a calculator allowed; the College describes this curriculum part as at least 70 percent of the test. The pedagogy component checks your understanding of the mathematics curriculum, Ontario's assessment and evaluation policy, and how to support learning for all students. EQAO does not list the number of questions or the time limit on its main MPT page, so check the official MPT website for the current format before test day.

To pass you must score 70 percent or higher on each component in the same attempt. A strong math score does not make up for a weak pedagogy score, or the other way round. Results come as an Applicant Report marked Successful or Not Yet Successful, posted to your MPT account within 10 days of the test, and successful results are sent to the College.

You book a session through the official MPT website. Sessions are held in person at approved test centres or online with remote proctoring, during set test windows. For 2026–2027 EQAO lists a fall window from October 1 to November 14, 2026, a winter window from January 28 to March 20, 2027, and a spring window from April 13 to May 29, 2027. Booking is first come, first served, and you can hold only one booking at a time. There is no fee and no limit on attempts.

Our practice bank mirrors the two components. The math topics follow the strands of the current Ontario curriculum: number, algebra (including coding), data, spatial sense and financial literacy. The pedagogy topics are written from three free Ministry of Education documents: the mathematics curriculum's front matter, Growing Success (Ontario's assessment, evaluation and reporting policy) and Learning for All. Our full mock exam uses 60 questions, 42 math and 18 pedagogy, and asks for 70 percent on each part, which is our own practice standard and not the official test length.

Study plan

How to prepare

  1. 1Start with a diagnostic: take one mixed practice set and note whether math or pedagogy is weaker. Because you need 70 percent on each part, the weaker part decides whether you pass.
  2. 2For math, rebuild speed with the skills you may not have used since high school: operations with fractions and negative numbers, percents and ratios, solving linear equations, area and volume, and mean, median and probability. Do a few questions every day without a calculator.
  3. 3Read every worked solution, even for questions you got right. The MPT rewards understanding why a method works, which is also what you will need when you teach it.
  4. 4For pedagogy, read the free source documents: the front matter of the Ontario mathematics curriculum (strands, mathematical processes, social-emotional learning skills), Growing Success (assessment for, as and of learning, the achievement chart and its four levels) and Learning for All (universal design for learning, differentiated instruction, the tiered approach).
  5. 5Learn the key terms precisely. Many pedagogy questions turn on the difference between assessment for learning and assessment of learning, or between universal design and differentiated instruction.
  6. 6Use the official resources and practice tests on the MPT website to learn the testing platform, and book early in a test window so you have time to rewrite in the same window if you need to.

FAQ

Ontario MPT test questions people ask

Is the Ontario Math Proficiency Test still required?

Yes. Since February 1, 2025, passing the MPT is a certification requirement for most applicants to the Ontario College of Teachers, including graduates of Ontario faculties of education. Teachers who already held a general certificate on that date do not need to take it.

What is the passing score for the MPT?

You need 70 percent or higher on each of the two components, mathematics and pedagogy, in the same attempt. Results are reported as Successful or Not Yet Successful.

How many questions are on the MPT?

The EQAO MPT page and FAQ describe a multiple-choice test with a mathematics component and a pedagogy component, but they do not state the number of questions or the time limit. The Ontario College of Teachers says the curriculum section is at least 70 percent of the test. Check the official MPT website for the current format. Our mock exam has 60 questions as a practice standard.

How much does the MPT cost and how many times can I take it?

There is no cost to write the MPT, including repeated attempts, and there is no limit on the number of attempts. You can hold only one booking at a time and can register again after you receive your results.

What math is on the MPT?

Content from the Ontario mathematics curriculum for Grades 3 to 9: number sense, fractions, decimals, percents and ratios; algebra, equations and coding; data and probability; geometry and measurement; and financial literacy. Some questions are answered without a calculator.

What does the pedagogy component cover?

Your understanding of the Ontario mathematics curriculum, assessment and evaluation practices, and learning for all students. In practice that means the curriculum's structure and mathematical processes, Growing Success, and Learning for All.

Can I write the MPT online?

Yes. EQAO offers sessions in person at approved test centres and online with remote proctoring. You book through the official MPT website during an open test window.

I am an internationally educated teacher. When do I need to pass the MPT?
