First and last month's rent are due at signing.

Hi Kwame,

My partner and I are looking for a new place. We need two bedrooms because we both work from home, and we have a small beagle named Biscuit. Our budget is $1,800 a month before utilities. I'm having knee surgery next month, so I'd like to avoid stairs for a while. We both commute downtown twice a week.

Thanks for any help, Nadia

Original practice only. This percentage is not a CELPIP level or CLB estimate. CELPIP has no universal pass mark. The timed exercise covers reading only; listening, writing and speaking are separate tools.

Colours summarize progress from your recent practice answers: red suggests more practice, yellow shows progress, and green shows stronger recent performance. Grey means fewer than 5 answers so far. These indicators do not predict official exam results.

Exam facts

Key facts: CELPIP-General Test

Free CELPIP practice tests for the CELPIP-General Test, the English test many people take for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. The question bank is built around the official test format: one topic for each of the four Reading parts, plus vocabulary and grammar, Writing and Speaking task skills, Listening strategy, and the score rules that IRCC applies. Every question is original, and every explanation tells you why the right answer is right.

Reading is where text practice helps most, so it has the largest share of the bank. You get original letters, schedules, articles and opinion pieces, each with four to six questions, written to match Reading Correspondence, Reading to Apply a Diagram, Reading for Information and Reading for Viewpoints. The timed reading exercise draws 38 original passage questions and uses our 55-minute practice timer. It does not reproduce the official section sequence or predict a CELPIP level. No sign-up, and your progress stays on your device.

About the test

About the CELPIP-General Test

CELPIP stands for the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program. The CELPIP-General Test measures English in four components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A shorter version, CELPIP-General LS, covers only Listening and Speaking. Both are taken on a computer in a single sitting. The Speaking component is recorded at the same computer, not done as a face-to-face interview. According to the July 2026 Guidebook for Test Takers, the full General test takes about three hours.

The guidebook gives these times for each component: Listening 46–55 minutes in six parts, Reading 43–56 minutes in four parts, Writing 53 minutes for two tasks, and Speaking 15 minutes for eight tasks. Reading has 11 questions in Part 1 (Reading Correspondence), 8 in Part 2 (Reading to Apply a Diagram), 9 in Part 3 (Reading for Information) and 10 in Part 4 (Reading for Viewpoints). Listening and Reading may also include unscored items. These look exactly like scored items and can appear anywhere, so give every question your full effort.

CELPIP has no single pass mark. Each component gets its own CELPIP level, and the official chart lines those levels up with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). From level 3 to level 12, the CELPIP level and the CLB level are the same number, so a 9 in Reading is CLB 9 in reading. Whether your result is enough depends on the program you apply to. For example, the Federal Skilled Worker Program asks for CLB 7 in all four abilities, while citizenship asks adults aged 18 to 54 for CLB 4 in speaking and listening.

For Express Entry, IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, not the LS version. Your results must be less than two years old both when you create your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. IRCC refuses an application sent with expired results. Citizenship works differently: if you sent CELPIP-G results with your permanent residence application, IRCC's language-proof tool says to include them with your citizenship application even if they have expired, as long as they are level 4 or higher in listening and speaking. The current CELPIP results page provides downloadable PDF reports, with results normally available in 2 to 4 business days and account access for five years. Account access does not extend IRCC’s two-year validity window.

This site is not affiliated with Paragon Testing Enterprises, which runs CELPIP. Our questions are written from the public test format and the published score descriptors. They are not official items and do not reuse official sample material. The Listening and Speaking topics are text-based: we can't play test audio or score your speech, so those topics teach the task types, the language each task calls for and the habits that help on test day. For practice with real audio, use the two free official practice tests linked below.

Study plan

How to prepare

  1. 1Start with one of the two free official practice tests on celpip.ca. Their answer keys and Listening transcripts show you the real interface and timing, and a baseline tells you which component needs the most work.
  2. 2Look up the CLB level your program needs before you study. Express Entry and citizenship ask for very different levels, and so does each Express Entry stream. Set a target level for each component and study toward the weakest one.
  3. 3Work through the four Reading topics in order. Part 1 has the most questions, and Part 2 uses short calculations from a schedule or price list. Learn to scan a diagram for what a person needs before you read every line.
  4. 4For Reading Part 3, practise deciding quickly whether information is actually in the passage. Many wrong answers name a paragraph that mentions the topic without giving the exact detail asked for.
  5. 5Write at least one email and one survey response under time pressure each week. Aim for about 150–200 words and make sure you cover every point in the prompt. Then check your tone: a note to a landlord you have never met should not sound like a text to a friend.
  6. 6Practise Speaking out loud with a timer, alone if you need to. For each of the eight tasks, rehearse the language it needs: advice structures for Task 1, the past tense for Task 2, the present continuous and location words for Task 3, and future forms for Task 4.
  7. 7Take the mock exam when your topic scores are steady. It has 38 Reading-style questions and a 55-minute timer. We use a 75% target (29 of 38) as a sign you are ready. That target is ours, not a CELPIP pass mark.
  8. 8In the last week, take the second official practice test, sleep well, and confirm which ID you chose when you registered. On test day, give every Listening and Reading question full effort, because unscored items look the same as scored ones.

FAQ

CELPIP test questions people ask

Is there a free CELPIP practice test?

Yes. This site has more than 250 free original CELPIP-style questions covering all four Reading parts, vocabulary and grammar, Writing and Speaking tasks, Listening strategy and score rules, plus a timed 38-question Reading-style mock exam. CELPIP also offers two free official online practice tests with answer keys and Listening transcripts on celpip.ca, and we recommend taking both.

How long is the CELPIP-General Test?

About three hours in one sitting, according to the July 2026 guidebook. Listening takes 46–55 minutes, Reading 43–56 minutes, Writing 53 minutes and Speaking 15 minutes. The LS version (Listening and Speaking only) takes about one hour.

How many questions are on CELPIP Reading?

The guidebook lists 38 Reading questions in four parts: 11 for Reading Correspondence, 8 for Reading to Apply a Diagram, 9 for Reading for Information and 10 for Reading for Viewpoints. Unscored items may appear on top of these, and they look the same as scored items.

What is the passing score for CELPIP?

There isn't one. CELPIP reports a level from 0 to 12 for each component, and the organization you apply to decides which level it needs. For example, IRCC asks for CLB 7 in all four abilities for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and CLB 4 in speaking and listening for citizenship. CELPIP levels 3 to 12 equal the same CLB level.

What CELPIP score do I need for Canadian citizenship?

Adults aged 18 to 54 must show CLB 4 in speaking and listening. With a CELPIP-G test taken on or after April 1, 2014, that means level 4 or higher in Listening and Speaking. If you sent those results with your permanent residence application, IRCC's language-proof tool says to include them even if they have expired, as long as the levels are high enough. Otherwise, send other proof, such as a new test. Adults 55 and older don't need to prove language skills.

What CELPIP score do I need for Express Entry?

It depends on the program. The Federal Skilled Worker Program needs CLB 7 in all four abilities. The Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 jobs. The Federal Skilled Trades Program needs CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing. Higher levels also earn more points.

How long are CELPIP results valid?

For Express Entry, IRCC requires language-test results less than two years old both when you complete your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. CELPIP’s current results page describes five years of account access; that does not extend IRCC validity. Other receiving organizations may set different rules.

How much does CELPIP cost?

The July 2026 guidebook lists the CELPIP-General Test at $295 plus taxes and CELPIP-General LS at $199 plus taxes. Prices can change and may differ outside Canada, so check celpip.ca when you register.

How soon do I get my CELPIP results?

Your scores normally appear in your CELPIP account 2 to 4 business days after the test, with an email notice. Download your Official Score Report as a PDF from the account. CELPIP’s current results policy says hard-copy score reports have been discontinued.

Is the CELPIP Speaking test with a real person?

No. Speaking is computer-delivered in the same sitting as the other components. You answer eight on-screen prompts out loud and your responses are recorded. There is no separate interview appointment.

Is CELPIP available in French?

No. CELPIP is an English test. If you want to prove French for immigration, IRCC accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada instead.

Are these the real CELPIP test questions?

No. Real CELPIP items are not public, and we don't copy official samples. Every passage and question here is original, written to match the official task types and format. Use our bank for volume and the official practice tests for the real look and feel.
