Exam facts

Key facts: Ontario Class A (AZ) Truck Knowledge Test

Free Ontario AZ practice tests for the Class A tractor-trailer knowledge test, written from the Official MTO Truck Handbook. Every question is original, explains the rule behind the answer and cites the handbook page it comes from. No sign-up, no paywall, and your progress stays on your device.

The Class A knowledge test is the written test you pass before MELT training and the AZ road test. This bank leans on what is specific to tractor-trailers: coupling and uncoupling, combination braking and jackknife control, semi-trailer off-tracking, size and weight limits, cargo securement and hours of service, plus the shared rules every truck driver must know.

About the test

About the Ontario Class A (AZ) Truck Knowledge Test

A Class A licence lets you drive a truck or tractor towing vehicles whose total gross weight is more than 4,600 kg, plus anything covered by Class D and Class G. To drive a full tractor-trailer with air brakes you also need the Z air brake endorsement, which is why the licence is usually called AZ. If you test in a combination whose trailer has no air brakes, you receive a restricted AR licence instead.

To apply you must be at least 18, hold a valid Ontario Class G or higher licence, pass a vision test, submit a satisfactory medical report and pass the knowledge test on operating large trucks and tractor-trailers. New Class A applicants must then complete mandatory entry-level training (MELT) with an approved provider before the road test. From January 1, 2027, you must also have held a Class G or higher licence for at least six months before the Class A road test.

Ontario does not publish the number of questions on the Class A knowledge test. DriveTest says all its knowledge tests are multiple choice, not timed, marked on the spot and available in English and French (commercial tests also in 18 other languages on computer), and that you need a total score of at least 80 percent. Our mock exam uses 40 questions and a pass mark of 32 (80 percent) as a practice standard, not as the official format.

Questions on the knowledge test come from the Official MTO Truck Handbook, which covers both Class A and Class D. Topics shared by both classes include daily inspections and defects, hours of service, cargo securement, size and weight limits, CVOR, sharing the road and keeping your licence. Topics specific to Class A include uncoupling and coupling, tractor-trailer braking and off-tracking, and the Class A road test. If you are also studying for the air brake endorsement, use our separate Ontario air brake (Z) practice test, written from the Official Air Brake Handbook.

The road test that follows has three parts: a daily inspection (with uncoupling and coupling for Class A), a backing manoeuvre and an on-road drive. Several topics in this bank follow the road-test chapter of the handbook, so studying for the written test also prepares you for what the examiner will expect.

Study plan

How to prepare

  1. 1Read the Official MTO Truck Handbook once, start to finish. It is free on ontario.ca and every question here cites a page of it.
  2. 2Learn the size limits as a set: 2.6 m wide, 4.15 m high, semi-trailers 14.65 m (16.2 m with special approval), combinations 23 m, LCVs up to 40 m.
  3. 3Memorize the hours-of-service numbers: 10 hours off a day, 13 hours driving, 14 hours on duty, 16 hours elapsed after 8 off, 70 hours in 7 days or 120 in 14, and resets of 36 or 72 hours.
  4. 4Practise the coupling sequence in order. Many questions turn on the order: secure, landing gear, lines, unlock, pull ahead only partly, confirm, pull clear; and for coupling, inspect, align, back slowly, tug test, check for gaps and jaws, connect lines, raise the landing gear.
  5. 5Know the combination-braking rules: balanced braking, the trailer hand valve, what to do when the tractor or the trailer starts to jackknife, and why you never park on the hand valve.
  6. 6Take one practice test per topic, then reread the handbook page cited under each question you miss.
  7. 7When you score 36 or more out of 40 on two different mock exams in a row, you are ready to book the knowledge test.
  8. 8Bring two pieces of ID, your completed medical report form, the test fee and any glasses you need to read.

FAQ

Ontario Class A (AZ) test questions people ask

How many questions are on the Ontario AZ written test?

Ontario and DriveTest do not publish the number of questions on the Class A knowledge test. Our mock exam uses 40 questions as a practice standard so you can time yourself and track progress; treat that number as ours, not the official format.

What is the pass mark for the AZ knowledge test?

DriveTest states that its knowledge tests need a total score of at least 80 percent, and that they are not timed. Our mock asks for 32 out of 40, which is 80 percent.

How much does the Class A knowledge test cost?

DriveTest's fee list shows $23.75 for a commercial knowledge test and $122.75 for the commercial licence package (knowledge test plus road test) for applicants under 65. Fees are set by the province and can change, so confirm on drivetest.ca.

Is the AZ test the same as the DZ test?

Both are written from the same Official MTO Truck Handbook, so many topics overlap. Class A adds tractor-trailer topics such as coupling and uncoupling, combination braking and semi-trailer off-tracking. We have a separate DZ practice test for Class D with its own questions.

Do I need the air brake endorsement for AZ?

Yes, to drive a full tractor-trailer with air brakes you need the Z endorsement on top of Class A. It has its own knowledge and practical test; use our Ontario air brake (Z) practice test to prepare.

Do I need MELT before the written test?

No. Mandatory entry-level training must be completed before the Class A road test, not before the knowledge test. Many students pass the written test first, then take the course.

Can I take the AZ knowledge test in another language?

DriveTest says knowledge tests are available in English or French at a minimum, and computerized commercial knowledge tests are offered in 20 languages, including Punjabi, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese), Spanish and Tamil.

Are these the real AZ test questions?

No. Real test questions are not public. Every question here is written by us from the Official MTO Truck Handbook and cites the page it comes from.
