SGI tests motorcycle learners with three written exams: a basic knowledge exam and a signs exam drawn from the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook, and a motorcycle knowledge exam drawn from the Motorcycle Handbook. This bank covers the motorcycle exam: helmets and gear, controls, turning and braking, lane position, night and bad weather, dangerous surfaces, emergencies, group riding, passengers and the MGDL rules. For the signs and rules exams, use our SGI Class 7 practice tests, which are written from the Driver's Handbook.

Sample Saskatchewan Class 6 questions
1You hold a learner 6 Endorsement. May you carry a passenger?
- A. No, it is illegal at the learner stage
- B. Yes, in daylight only
- C. Yes, if the passenger has a licence
- D. Yes, on roads under 60 km/h
Learner (6 Endorsement) and Novice 1 riders may not carry passengers.
2Which of these is a fixed hazard?
- A. A guardrail beside the road
- B. A car waiting to turn left
- C. A cyclist in the lane
- D. A deer standing near the ditch
Fixed hazards do not move: road surface problems, signs, guardrails, bridges. Vehicles, pedestrians and animals are moving hazards.
3Why is checking the oil level part of the daily check?
- A. Low oil makes the headlight and signals dim
- B. Low oil switches off the turn signals
- C. Low oil can seize the engine and lock the rear wheel
- D. Low oil only affects how much fuel the engine burns
Without enough oil the engine can seize, which can lock the rear wheel and cause a loss of control.
4Which equipment must a motorcycle have to carry a passenger?
- A. A seat for two and passenger footrests
- B. A sidecar and a second mirror
- C. A larger engine and a windshield
- D. A sissy bar and a backrest
The seat must hold both of you without crowding and there must be footrests for the passenger.
5How should you ride on a gravel road?
- A. In the tire tracks, away from loose edge gravel
- B. Weaving to find firm spots
- C. Along the edge where gravel is thickest
- D. At highway speed for stability
Traction on gravel is poor. Stay in the tire tracks, avoid the loose gravel at the edge, and avoid sudden moves.
6In a staggered group on an open highway, how far is the third rider behind the first?
- A. Four seconds
- B. Half a second
- C. One second
- D. Two seconds
The third rider takes the left position two seconds behind the first rider; the fourth rides two seconds behind the second.
7How can you dry your brakes when riding in the rain?
- A. Pump them hard every few seconds
- B. Ride with the clutch in
- C. Shift to neutral and coast
- D. Apply them very lightly now and then
Test your brakes periodically in the rain; a very light application dries them out.
8Your motorcycle bounces several times after crossing a bump. What may need attention?
- A. The tachometer
- B. The mirrors
- C. The fuel valve
- D. The shock absorbers
Repeated bouncing or a clunk after a bump means the shock absorbers may need adjusting or replacing.
9Starting uphill from a stop, what holds the bike while your right hand works the throttle?
- A. The rear foot brake
- B. The side stand
- C. The clutch lever alone
- D. The front brake lever
Hold the bike with the front brake while starting and selecting first gear, then switch to the foot brake so your right hand can open the throttle.
10Your engine loses power and starts to sound wrong, as if it may seize. What should you do?
- A. Squeeze the clutch and pull off to let it cool
- B. Open the throttle wide to clear it
- C. Shift into a lower gear at once
- D. Keep riding to the nearest garage before it stops
A seizing engine can lock the rear wheel. Squeeze the clutch to disconnect it, pull off the road, and let the engine cool before having it checked.
About the test
About the Saskatchewan Motorcycle Knowledge Test (6 Endorsement)
In Saskatchewan a motorcycle is not a separate licence class. You add an endorsement to a Class 5 or higher licence. The first step is the 6 Endorsement, the motorcycle learner's licence, and riders often search for it as the SGI Class 6 test. Every first-time rider, whatever their age, then moves through the three-stage Motorcycle Graduated Driver Licensing (MGDL) program: Learner, Novice 1 and Novice 2. You must be at least 16, and a parent or guardian must approve if you are under 18.
To get the 6 Endorsement you pass a vision test and three computer-based or written exams: the basic knowledge exam on the rules of the road, the signs exam, and the motorcycle knowledge exam. SGI's handbook sets the pass mark for each at 80 percent and lists a $25 charge each time you write one. SGI does not publish how many questions the motorcycle exam has or a time limit, so our 25-question mock exam is a practice length we chose, scored at the same 80 percent. If you fail a knowledge exam, you can write it again as early as the next day.
After the written exams you either complete an SGI-approved motorcycle training course or pass a basic ability road test within three tries. SGI strongly recommends the course: it replaces the basic road test, removes the 400 cc engine-size restriction, and waives the $500 MGDL fee charged at each of the three stages. Riders who take the basic road test on a bike of 400 cc or less get an R restriction to motorcycles of that size.
As a learner you may not carry passengers, tow, or ride from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise, and you must show a red L placard. You ride as a learner for at least 12 months, and at most 24, before the road test for the M endorsement. Novice 1 riders still cannot carry passengers or ride between midnight and 5 a.m.; Novice 2 riders may carry passengers. At every MGDL stage you must have zero alcohol and drugs, keep your arms and legs covered, and wear gloves, ankle-covering boots and an approved three-quarter, modular or full-face helmet.
This site is independent. It is not run by or affiliated with SGI or the Government of Saskatchewan, and passing our tests does not give you any licence or endorsement. Book your exams through MySGI or a motor licence issuer, and check sgi.sk.ca for current rules and fees before you go.
Study plan
How to prepare
- 1Read SGI's Motorcycle Handbook online at sgi.sk.ca/motorcycle. It is free, organized into short sections, and the motorcycle knowledge exam is based on it.
- 2Do not skip the other two exams. Study the signs and rules of the road chapters of the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook, then practise with our SGI Class 7 tests, which cover the same basic and signs material.
- 3Take one practice test per topic here. When you miss a question, open the handbook section named under the explanation and reread it before moving on.
- 4Learn the numbers that riders mix up: three seconds of following distance, two seconds between staggered riders in a group, groups of four or five at most, a 45 to 90 degree angle across railway tracks, 1.6 mm of tire tread, and the learner and Novice 1 night curfews.
- 5Learn lane position as situations: slightly left of centre in the curb lane, slightly right of centre on multi-lane streets, never in the oily centre strip, and toward the centre of the road when a car is waiting to pull out.
- 6Know the order of the emergency steps: kill switch and clutch for a stuck throttle, grip and ease off for a wobble, stay off the brakes for a blowout.
- 7When you can score 22 or more out of 25 on two different mock exams, you are ready to book through MySGI or a motor licence issuer. Bring your licence and, if you are under 18, the signed parental approval form.
