Exam facts

Key facts: Manitoba Commercial Knowledge Tests (Class 1–4 and Air Brake)

Free practice tests for Manitoba Public Insurance's professional driver knowledge tests: Class 1, 2, 3 and 4, plus the air brake test. Every question is original, written from the MPI Professional Driver's Manual and the MPI Air Brake Manual (February 2026), explains why the right answer is right, and names the manual page it comes from. No sign-up, no limit on attempts, and your progress stays on your own device.

MPI gives you 30 minutes for each knowledge test but does not publish the number of questions or the pass mark. Our mock exam is a 40-question practice format inside that 30-minute limit, drawn from the whole Professional Driver's Manual, with a practice standard of 80 per cent. Use the Class 1 and Class 4 pages to drill your class, the air brake page for the A endorsement, then take timed mocks.

  1. 1After stopping at the tracks, what must a school bus driver do before crossing?
    • A. Open the service door, look and listen both ways
    • B. Turn on the stop arm and alternating lights
    • C. Ask a student to watch from the rear window
    • D. Turn off the engine and wait one minute

Fully open the service door, look and listen both ways along the tracks, close the door, and move only when it is safe.

  2. 2A tire has been run while flat and is hot. What should you do before moving the vehicle?
    • A. Drive slowly to the nearest tire shop
    • B. Spray it with water from the radiator
    • C. Let it cool, or replace it if you must move
    • D. Inflate it to normal pressure and drive on

Tires run soft or flat should cool before the vehicle moves; if you must move the vehicle, replace the tire first.

  3. 3What do baffles in a tank compartment control?
    • A. Forward and backward surge, not side-to-side
    • B. The temperature of the liquid
    • C. The pressure in the brake system
    • D. Side-to-side surge only, not forward and backward

Baffles are walls with holes that reduce the liquid's forward and backward movement; side-to-side movement is not restricted, so take curves carefully.

  4. 4During a bus inspection, what must be checked about the emergency exits?
    • A. They are covered to keep out the cold
    • B. Only the roof hatch needs to be checked
    • C. They are locked so passengers cannot open them
    • D. They work, with a buzzer, from inside and out

Emergency exits and the warning buzzer must operate from inside and outside, and must not be damaged, blocked or obstructed.

  5. 5When must a pilot vehicle follow an overlength vehicle?
    • A. Only at night or in poor visibility
    • B. When it exceeds 25 m
    • C. When it is longer than 30 m
    • D. When it exceeds 23 m

A pilot vehicle, equipped under The Highway Traffic Act, must follow a vehicle whose overall length exceeds 30 m.

  6. 6You apply the pedal and the trailer hand valve at the same time. What pressure does the trailer get?
    • A. The lower of the two pressures
    • B. The higher of the two pressures
    • C. Only the pedal pressure
    • D. The two pressures added together

When the hand valve and brake pedal are used together, the trailer receives the higher pressure through the service line.

  7. 7How often must a 55-year-old Class 1 driver submit a Medical Examination Report?
    • A. Every five years
    • B. Every year
    • C. Every three years
    • D. Every two years

Class 1 to 4 drivers submit a medical report every five years to age 45, every three years to age 64 and every year from age 65.

  8. 8Your ABS engages during a hard stop. What should you do with the brake pedal?
    • A. Keep steady pressure; do not pump it
    • B. Use only the trailer hand valve
    • C. Pump the pedal quickly and repeatedly
    • D. Release it completely, then reapply

With ABS, keep applying the pressure you need and do not pump; the system applies and releases up to five times a second, faster than you could pump.

  9. 9Except for pole trailers, what is the maximum length of a draw-bar in Manitoba?
    • A. 5 m
    • B. 1.83 m
    • C. 3 m
    • D. 10 m

Except for a motor vehicle pulling a pole trailer, the draw-bar or coupling device between vehicles must not exceed five metres.

  10. 10When a whole wheel assembly separates, what is the usual cause?
    • A. A worn brake lining
    • B. A tire with low pressure
    • C. A wheel bearing failure
    • D. A missing mud flap

When the entire assembly fails it is usually a bearing failure; warning signs include oil leaks from the bearing assembly and very hot hubs.

About the test

About the Manitoba Commercial Knowledge Tests (Class 1–4 and Air Brake)

Manitoba's class licence system separates professional from non-professional drivers. Class 1 is for semi-trailer trucks. Class 2 is for buses seating over 24 passengers and school buses seating over 36 while carrying passengers. Class 3 is for trucks with more than two axles and for trucks towing a unit registered over 4,540 kg. Class 4 covers ambulances and other emergency vehicles, buses seating 10 to 24 and school buses seating 10 to 36. Each class includes the classes below it, and any vehicle with air brakes also needs the air brake endorsement.

To start, you must be at least 18 and hold at least a Class 5I or 5A licence for Classes 2 to 4, or a Class 5F (Full) licence for Class 1. You file a Medical Examination Report, pass the knowledge test for your class, then receive Authorized Instruction and drive with a qualified supervising driver. You may write the knowledge test before your medical is approved, but the medical must be approved before Authorized Instruction is issued. Class 1 applicants must also finish approved Mandatory Entry-Level Training before booking the road test.

MPI says the Class 1 to 4 knowledge tests are based on the Professional Driver's Manual, and the air brake test on the Air Brake Manual. The manual is organised so that Section 2 applies to every class, Section 3 adds information for Class 1 and 3 drivers, and Section 4 adds information for Class 2 and 4 drivers. Our topics follow the same split: General, Class 1 & 3, Class 2 & 4, and Air brake. MPI does not publish how each test is weighted, so our mock is a study format, not MPI's blueprint.

Knowledge tests are not open book, phones and electronic devices are not allowed, and each has a 30-minute limit. Only one knowledge test per class is allowed per day, and if you fail a Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or air brake knowledge test you may retake it on the next working day. The Class 1 and air brake knowledge tests are offered in English, French or Punjabi; Class 2, 3, 4 and school bus tests in English and French. You need a 5L licence before you can write the air brake knowledge test.

Some Manitoba rules differ from other provinces and are worth extra study: a minimum four-second following distance, 90 m between commercial vehicles outside restricted speed areas, railway stops 5 m from the rail in town and 15 m outside, a 5 m draw-bar limit, a 3 psi a minute leak limit for a straight truck or bus, and a low air warning that must come on before 55 psi. This site is independent and is not affiliated with MPI; passing our practice tests does not give you a licence or endorsement.

Study plan

How to prepare

  1. 1Read the MPI Professional Driver's Manual and Air Brake Manual. Both are free online as PDFs, in English and French, and every question here cites the page it comes from.
  2. 2Study Section 2 first. It applies to every class and covers speed and space, braking, tires, railway crossings, weather and skids.
  3. 3Then add your class: Section 3 (turning, coupling, dimensions, loads, dangerous goods, highway trains) for Class 1 and 3, or Section 4 (buses, school buses, emergency vehicles, passengers) for Class 2 and 4. Class 1 and 3 drivers are also expected to know Section 4.
  4. 4Make a list of Manitoba's numbers: 4,540 kg towed weight, the four-second rule, 90 m following distance, 5 m and 15 m railway stops, 30 m parking from a crossing, 4.15 m, 2.6 m, 12.5 m, 21.5 m and 23 m size limits, 3 mm and 2 mm tread depths.
  5. 5For air brakes, learn MPI's test values: low air warning by 55 psi, cut-out 120–145 psi, cut-in at least 100 psi, build-up 85 to 100 psi in two minutes, leak limits of 3, 4 and 6 psi a minute, trailer supply valve closing before 20 psi, and trailer spring brakes applying below 60 psi.
  6. 6Practise the air brake inspection out loud. The practical test is done without a checklist, and you must bring chocks, a watch, chamber sizes, a way to hold the pedal and tools to mark and measure pushrod stroke.
  7. 7Take a timed 40-question mock and aim for 36 or more on two mocks in a row. MPI's real tests have a 30-minute limit per test.
  8. 8Book through an Autopac agent, bring ID and your Medical Examination Report, and plan for one knowledge test per class per day.

FAQ

Manitoba Commercial test questions people ask

How many questions are on the MPI Class 1 knowledge test?

MPI does not publish the number of questions or a pass mark for the Class 1 to 4 knowledge tests. It does publish a 30-minute time limit. Our mock uses 40 questions as a practice format; confirm the current format with MPI or your Autopac agent.

What is the pass mark for MPI's professional knowledge tests?

MPI does not publish a pass mark. Our mock exam uses 80 per cent (32 of 40) as a practice standard. Aim well above it before you book.

How much does an MPI knowledge test cost?

MPI's testing page lists $12 per knowledge test (the Professional Driver's Manual still shows $10). Road tests are listed at $50 for Class 1, 2 or 3, $40 for Class 4 and $35 for the air brake practical. Fees can change, so check before you go.

Can I take the Class 1 or air brake test in Punjabi?

Yes. MPI offers the Class 1 and air brake knowledge tests in English, French or Punjabi. Class 2, 3, 4 and school bus tests are offered in English and French. Say which language you want when you book.

What if I fail a knowledge test?

You may retake a Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or air brake knowledge test on the next working day. Only one knowledge test per class is allowed each day.

What licence do I need before I can start?

You must be at least 18. For Classes 2 to 4 you need at least a Class 5I or 5A licence; for Class 1 you need a Class 5F (Full) licence. You also need a Medical Examination Report and, for the air brake test, at least a 5L licence.

Is MELT required for Class 1 in Manitoba?

Yes. You must show you completed an approved Mandatory Entry-Level Training course before you can book the Class 1 road test. Practice hours as a Class 1A learner do not count toward MELT.

Does MPI have its own practice quizzes?

Yes. MPI's website has official driving quizzes for each licence class. They are a good extra check, but they are not the test questions. Our questions are written from the manuals and explain each answer with a page reference.

Are these the real MPI test questions?

No. MPI's test questions are not public. Every question here is original, written by us from the official MPI manuals, and cites the page it comes from. We are not affiliated with MPI.
