Key facts: Manitoba Class 6 Motorcycle Knowledge Test

Free practice quizzes for Manitoba's Class 6 motorcycle knowledge test, the computer test you pass at MPI before you can take the motorcycle training course and ride as a learner. No sign-up, and your progress stays on your device.

The Class 6 test is a supplementary test on the safe operation of a motorcycle. Our bank covers the whole handbook: GDL rules for new riders, helmets and gear, required equipment, controls and safety checks, starting and stopping, lane position and the four-second following distance, counter-steering and intersections, highway and group riding, passengers, night riding and wildlife, slippery surfaces, emergencies and impaired-driving penalties. You can drill one topic at a time, then sit a 25-question mock exam with the official 30-minute time limit.

About the test

About the Manitoba Class 6 Motorcycle Knowledge Test

In Manitoba a Class 6 licence is required to ride a motorcycle. To start, you must be at least 16 and already hold a valid Manitoba driver's licence of any class and stage. Every first-time rider, whatever their age, enters Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) for Class 6, which has four stages: M (motorcycle training course), L (Learner, at least nine months), I (Intermediate, at least 15 months) and F (Full).

The first step is the knowledge test. MPI gives it on a computer, it is not open book, and phones and other devices are not allowed in the test area. MPI's handbook sets a 30-minute time limit, and the test is offered in English or French. MPI's Class 6 page listed a $10 fee in May 2026, but MPI has since raised other test fees, so confirm the amount when you book. MPI does not publish the number of questions or the pass mark, so our 25-question mock exam is a practice length we chose, scored at 80 percent as a practice standard. If you are in GDL and fail, you wait seven days before trying again; outside GDL you can retry the next working day.

Passing the knowledge test and vision standards gets you a Class 6M licence, which lets you ride only while taking an approved one-day motorcycle training course. After the course you receive a Class 6L Learner licence. Learners may not carry passengers, tow, or ride from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise, and must have no drugs or alcohol in their system. Time in the M stage does not count toward the nine-month learner period.

After at least nine months as a learner you can take the road test, held during the motorcycle testing season from May 1 to October 30. Passing it moves you to the Intermediate Stage, where you may carry a passenger and tow but still must have no drugs or alcohol. If you already completed the Intermediate Stage for Class 5, that time counts for Class 6. In the Full Stage, the no drugs or alcohol rule continues for the first 36 months.

This site is independent. It is not run by or affiliated with Manitoba Public Insurance or the Government of Manitoba, and passing our quizzes does not give you any licence. Book your test through an Autopac agent, an MPI Service Centre or mpi.mb.ca, and check MPI's site for current rules and fees before you go.

Study plan

How to prepare

  1. 1Read MPI's Motorcycle Handbook, a free PDF linked from mpi.mb.ca. It is short, and the Class 6 knowledge test is on the safe operation of a motorcycle, which is what the handbook covers. MPI also suggests the Driver's Handbook for general rules of the road.
  2. 2Take one practice quiz per topic. When you miss a question, open the handbook page named under the explanation and reread it before moving on.
  3. 3Learn the Manitoba numbers, which differ from other provinces: a four-second following distance, groups of no more than four, 70 percent of braking from the front brake, counter-steering above 20 km/h, 45 degrees or more across railway tracks, and 0.8 mm of tire tread.
  4. 4Learn lane position by situation: the dominant position (the tire track nearest the line between same-direction lanes) on multi-lane roads, the left tire track when being passed, and the right side of your lane near a hill crest or when a large vehicle is coming toward you.
  5. 5Memorize the emergency steps in order: squeeze the clutch first for a stuck throttle, no braking for a blowout or speed wobble, and steer slightly toward a slow-speed skid while easing off the brake.
  6. 6Practise under time: the real test has a 30-minute limit. When you can score 22 or more out of 25 on two different mock exams, you are ready to book.
  7. 7Book at an Autopac agent, an MPI Service Centre or online. Riders under 18 cannot book the Class 6 knowledge test online, and the tests are given on weekdays only.
