Practise G1 licence conditions →The conditions to check before each trip
| Check | G1 rule |
|---|---|
| Supervisor | A fully licensed driver with at least four years of driving experience must accompany you. |
| Front seat | The accompanying driver is the only other person in the front seat. |
| Time | Do not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. |
| Road | No 400-series highways or high-speed expressways, except with an Ontario-certified driving instructor. |
| Alcohol and seating | Keep zero blood alcohol; every passenger must have a working seatbelt. |
Check the licence and experience, not just age
Being an adult does not automatically make someone a qualified accompanying driver. Ask about the licence they hold and the driving experience that counts. A friend who recently passed a road test may still be unable to supervise your G1 practice.
Before leaving, agree on a route the supervisor can help you manage. Allow time to pull over and discuss an unfamiliar junction rather than expecting detailed directions at the last moment. This planning advice supports practice; it does not add an exception to a licence restriction.

Original learning scenarios
Late finish: a learner plans to leave a friend’s house at 12:15 a.m. with an experienced accompanying driver. The supervisor does not remove the midnight-to-5-a.m. restriction. Arrange another driver or another way home.
Highway shortcut: a navigation app suggests a 400-series highway. A qualified friend in the passenger seat is not the same as an Ontario-certified driving instructor. Choose a permitted route for ordinary supervised practice.
Recently licensed sibling: an older sibling holds a full licence but has not accumulated four years of driving experience. Age and family relationship do not replace the experience requirement. Check who is qualified before practising.
Make a plan you can follow
Write down the route, the intended finish time and who will supervise. If a route is unfamiliar, check its road names before entering it. An automatic navigation suggestion is not a check of your licence conditions.
Make a separate return plan. A trip that begins in permitted hours may finish after midnight because of a late event, weather or traffic. Choose an alternative in advance rather than treating the deadline as a reason to rush.
Study the reason behind each restriction
Use the graduated-licensing questions to distinguish a learner condition from a later G2 rule. When you miss an answer, name the condition you overlooked: who, when, where or seating. Then explain what would need to change for the fictional trip.
For application steps, documents and the knowledge-test visit, keep using the existing G1 licence guide. For the next practical test, use the G2 road-test guide. These are different tasks from checking a supervised trip.
