In Ontario, everyone who sells, serves, delivers or takes orders for alcohol for a licensee must hold a valid certificate from a training course approved by the AGCO Board. Smart Serve is the only program approved for bars, restaurants and the rest of the licensed sector, so it is the certificate most employers ask for. You get it by completing the Smart Serve course online and passing a final test watched by a proctor over your webcam.
This guide covers which course to buy, what it costs, what you need on test day, how to get your eCertificate and when to renew. Every fact links to the AGCO or Smart Serve Ontario page it comes from. The Smart Serve course and test are proprietary and we do not copy them: our free practice tests, printable sheet and study guide, linked below, are written from Ontario liquor law and AGCO guidance so you learn the rules the test checks.
Step by step
Choose the right course
The Smart Serve Full Course meets the training requirement for every liquor licensee and employee, including bars, restaurants, grocery and convenience stores and delivery licensees. Retail courses, including Smart Serve Retail, count only in licensed retail stores.

Validity and renewal
Smart Serve certificates are valid for 5 years from the date of issue, shown on the certificate. To renew you buy and complete the course again and pass a new proctored test online; you then get a new eCertificate with a 5-year expiry. Certificates issued before September 1, 2018 expired on August 31, 2023. Source: Smart Serve Ontario — Recertification
Common mistakes
- Buying a retail-only course for a bar or restaurant job. A retail certificate does not let you sell, serve or deliver liquor outside a retail store. Source: AGCO — Responsible liquor sale, service and delivery training
- Starting the final test without enough time or privacy. Leaving the test or stepping out of the camera frame loses that attempt, and a flagged infraction can cancel your attempts even if you passed. Source: Smart Serve Ontario — The Smart Serve Full Course (French page, Internet Archive copy of December 2025)
- Letting the 30-day window run out. Course and test access end 30 days after purchase, and fees are not refunded. Source: Smart Serve Ontario — The Smart Serve Full Course (French page, Internet Archive copy of December 2025)
- Renewing after the expiry date. Recertifying while your certificate is still valid costs $29.95; once it has expired you pay the full $44.95. Source: Smart Serve Ontario — Recertification
- Relying on an old card with no expiry date. Certificates issued before September 1, 2018 are no longer valid. Source: Smart Serve Ontario — Recertification
- Having someone else do the course on your account. It is for individual use and must be completed by the registered account holder. Source: Smart Serve Ontario — The Smart Serve Full Course (French page, Internet Archive copy of December 2025)
