About the test
About the Selling It Right B.C. Cannabis Retail Certification Test
Selling It Right is British Columbia's mandatory responsible sales program for non-medical cannabis. It is not the liquor program: B.C. uses Serving It Right for alcohol and Selling It Right for cannabis. Under the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act and the Cannabis Licensing Regulation, a cannabis retail store licensee cannot operate without a certificate, and every adult who sells cannabis in a private or government store, supervises those sales, delivers cannabis as an individual delivery person or markets cannabis for a marketing licensee must hold one.
According to the program's official FAQ, the course is free and takes about three hours. The exam costs $35 plus tax and includes three attempts; after a third failed attempt, another $35 buys three more. The exam has 30 randomly generated multiple-choice questions, you need 80 per cent, which is 24 correct, and there is no time limit. It is offered in English only. The certificate is valid for two years from the date you pass, and the expiry date is printed on it.
The rules behind the exam come from B.C. law. A minor is anyone under 19, and minors may not enter a cannabis store, work in the business or be served. Staff confirm age with two pieces of ID, one primary and one secondary. Stores may be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., may sell at most 30 grams of dried cannabis or the equivalent and four plants per transaction, and must not sell to anyone who shows signs of intoxication. A person asked to leave may not come back for 24 hours.
Our 11 topics cover the certificate itself, minors and ID, intoxication and conduct in the store, products and limits, store operations and security, delivery, promotion and inducements, records and inspections, cannabis and health, possession and public use, and cannabis and driving. Health facts come from the Province's cannabis and health pages, Health Canada's consumer information and Canada's Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines.
This site is independent. It is not affiliated with the Province of British Columbia, the LCRB or Responsible Service BC, and passing our practice tests does not give you a certificate. Only the official Selling It Right exam does that. Use our questions to learn the rules well enough that the real exam feels familiar.
Study plan
How to prepare
- 1Start with the numbers: 19 to buy or enter, 30 grams and four plants per transaction, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., a 24-hour ban after being asked to leave and a two-year certificate.
- 2Learn the two-piece ID rule well: one primary ID with photo and date of birth, plus a secondary ID with name and signature or photo. Know examples of each.
- 3Study refusals as scenarios: a customer showing signs of intoxication, an adult buying for a minor, a parent with a baby at the door, a delivery recipient who is impaired.
- 4Go through the store rules: no consumption, games or window displays, no self-service or vending machines, monitored alarms, cameras recording at all times and video kept 30 days.
- 5Read the delivery rules twice. Payment before the order leaves, name and signature at the door, same-day return of undelivered orders and no fees or upselling by drivers are common points.
- 6Know the promotion limits: no loyalty programs, no words like dispensary or pharmacy, no samples to customers, and no money or gifts from producers to push a brand.
- 7Take one topic test at a time and read every explanation. Each one names the section of B.C. law or the LCRB handbook behind the answer.
- 8When you score 27 or more out of 30 on two different mock exams, you are ready. That gives you a three-question cushion above the 24 needed to pass.

What is the passing score for Selling It Right?
You need 80 per cent, which is 24 out of 30. The official FAQ also says there is no time limit on the exam.

How long is a Selling It Right certificate valid?
Two years from the date you pass the final exam. The Cannabis Licensing Regulation sets the two-year period, and the expiry date appears on the certificate.
Is Selling It Right the same as Serving It Right?

Who needs Selling It Right?
Cannabis retail store licensees, every adult who sells non-medical cannabis in a private or government store, adults who supervise those sales, individual delivery persons who deliver for a store, and people who market non-medical cannabis.
How old do you have to be to work in a B.C. cannabis store?

Are these the real Selling It Right exam answers?
No. The exam is randomly generated and its questions are not published, and copying real answers would be cheating. Every question here is original, written from B.C. law and LCRB guidance. Learning the rules is what gets you through any version of the exam.
Can I use a cannabis certificate from another province in B.C.?
No. The official FAQ says worker qualifications from other jurisdictions do not let you work in a licensed B.C. cannabis store; you must pass Selling It Right.
