Exam facts

Key facts: ASP Construction 30-Hour Course Exam – General Health and Safety on Construction Sites (Québec)

Free practice tests for the final exam of Québec's mandatory construction safety course, Santé et sécurité générale sur les chantiers de construction, better known as the ASP Construction 30-hour course or "cours 30 h". Every question is original and explains the rule behind the answer, citing the Construction Safety Code (CSTC), the Act respecting occupational health and safety (LSST) or ASP Construction's own course page. No sign-up, no limits, and your progress stays on your device.

This exam is French-first: the law, the regulation and the course page are in French, and our French version was written first. Important: the course manual and the final exam belong to ASP Construction and we never copy them. Our questions come from the public law that the 19 modules are built on: prevention rights, site organization, protective equipment, noise and manual handling, electricity and lockout, tools and fire, site traffic, contaminants and WHMIS, falls, ladders and scaffolds, lifting equipment, excavations and confined spaces.

    • A. Once, before the first entry
    • B. Every 2 hours, by a trained person
    • C. Once a day, at the start of the shift
    • D. Every 8 hours, by the inspector

Readings are taken every 2 hours, at the riskiest spots, by a trained person, and recorded in a register, unless continuous-reading instruments with alarms are used.

  2. 2A worker uses an extension cord as a rope to lower a bucket. Why is this not allowed?
    • A. An extension cord must never be unrolled outside a building, even in dry weather
    • B. The cord must stay plugged in at all times during the day
    • C. Only an electrician may touch an extension cord on a site
    • D. An electrical conductor may only be used for its intended purpose

Under section 2.11.1, electrical equipment, tools and conductors are used only for the purpose they were designed for. Using a cord to lift a load can damage its insulation.

  3. 3A scaffold platform is covered in freezing rain. What does the Code provide?
    • A. Only the foreman may go up, to break the ice with a sledgehammer
    • B. Workers may go up if they hold on to the guardrail
    • C. No one may stand on it until a non-slip material has been spread

    • B. Gloves are mandatory for all mechanized equipment, summer and winter
    • C. Gloves are banned when running mechanized equipment, unless there is a frostbite risk
    • D. Gloves are allowed if they are thick leather and fit the hands well

Section 2.10.10 bans gloves or mitts when operating mechanized equipment because they can be caught. The only exception is a frostbite risk; the gloves must then give a good grip and come off easily.

  5. 5What does the Code require for workers who handle loads?
    • A. They must be taught how to lift and carry loads
    • B. They must wear leather gloves and a back belt at all times on site
    • C. They must have at least five years in the trade
    • D. They must pass a strength test every year

The Code requires material handlers to be instructed in how to lift and carry loads. It sets no strength test, minimum experience or mandatory gloves for all handling.

    • A. Backing in a no-pedestrian backing area or being guided all the way by a signaller

    • B. An orange jacket, whatever its gauge or use
    • C. A plug without a ground pin to avoid tripping the breaker
    • D. A grounding conductor and a design for outdoor use

Section 2.11.3 requires a cord with a bonding conductor, rated for outdoor use, of the extra-hard or hard-usage type for the voltage, and rated at least as high as the circuit's protection. Colour and length are not the test.

  9. 9Which standard must a hard hat worn on a site meet?
    • A. CSA Z96
    • B. CSA Z195
    • C. CSA Z259.10

About the test

About the ASP Construction 30-Hour Course Exam – General Health and Safety on Construction Sites (Québec)

In Québec, section 2.4.2 of the Construction Safety Code requires the employer to make sure that site workers, and the management and supervisory staff who mainly and usually work on a construction site, have passed the course Santé et sécurité générale sur les chantiers de construction. The course is run by ASP Construction, the sector-based joint association for construction health and safety, and taught by recognized training organizations across the province, in person or in a virtual classroom.

According to ASP Construction, the course has 19 modules taught over 30 hours, followed by a final exam. You must attend all 19 modules before taking the exam, and ASP Construction issues its card only to learners who attended the whole course and passed the final exam. The organization that taught you gives you a provisional certificate valid for 12 weeks, and the official card arrives by mail within 12 weeks. The card has no expiry date, and a lost or unreadable card can be replaced for $20.

There are no prerequisites. ASP Construction suggests taking the course from age 16, it is offered in French and English, and the learner's manual also exists in Spanish. The price varies by training organization, which sets its own fees and schedule. APSAM's Travaux publics et construction course is recognized as equivalent. ASP Construction does not publish the number of exam questions or the pass mark on its course page, so our mock exam uses its own practice standard.

Our twelve topics follow the course modules and the sections of the law behind them: prevention principles and the right to refuse; site organization and the principal contractor; personal protective equipment; manual handling and noise; electricity and lockout; tools, machines and fire; site traffic and vehicles; contaminants, asbestos and WHMIS; fall protection; ladders and scaffolds; lifting equipment for loads and workers; and excavations and confined spaces. We use the official terms in French, such as maître d'œuvre, cadenassage, signaleur de chantier and espace clos, and their English equivalents.

This site is independent. It is not affiliated with ASP Construction, the CNESST or any training organization, and our practice tests do not give you a card or count toward the course. The Code and the course can change, so check asp-construction.org and LégisQuébec before your exam, and always follow your trainer and the rules on your site.

Study plan

How to prepare

  1. 1Attend all 19 modules: a missed module must be made up with your trainer before you can get the card.
  2. 2Learn the prevention basics: eliminating hazards at the source, the right to refuse dangerous work and how it works step by step, and the duties of workers, employers and the principal contractor.
  3. 3Memorize the key fall numbers: protection above 3 m (or 1.2 m with a wheelbarrow or vehicle), guardrails 1 m to 1.2 m, warning lines 2 m from the edge, 6 kN or 1.8 m for fall arrest and 18 kN anchors.
  4. 4Know the lockout steps in order: stop the machine, control residual energy, lock out each isolation point with your own padlock, verify, then remove locks and restart safely.
  5. 5Review ladders and scaffolds: the 1/4 to 1/3 ladder angle, 900 mm above the landing, 470 mm platforms and examinations every 3 months.
  6. 6Study trenches and confined spaces: shoring, 1.2 m and 3 m setbacks, a ladder every 15 m, and the 19.5% to 23% oxygen and 25% LEL entry limits.
  7. 7Revise WHMIS 2015 pictograms, labels and the 16-section safety data sheet, and the Québec rule that labels and SDSs must be in French.
  8. 8Take our 40-question mock exams without notes and aim for 34 or more before your real exam.
