The province requires at least 80% on its final exam on the ordinary approved-training route. Its current public licensing page does not publish the exam’s question count or time limit. Our 50-question mixed exercises are therefore independent, untimed practice with a 40/50 internal target, not a claimed replica of the provincial exam. A practice result does not complete training, issue a licence or predict an official pass.

Sample Alberta Security Guard (ABST) questions

Tap a question to see the answer. The full interactive test is at the top of the page.
  1. 1For the Trespass to Premises Act, what makes someone an authorized representative of the owner?
    • A. The person once visited the property with a customer.
    • B. The person holds any licence issued in another province.
    • C. The person simply wears clothing marked SECURITY.
    • D. The owner authorizes the person to give notice not to trespass.

The Act’s definition concerns authorization by the owner to give notice not to trespass. A uniform, unrelated visit or licence alone does not supply that property-specific authorization.

  2. 2Smoke blocks the usual exit route. What should guide the guard’s directions?
    • A. An available safe route under the evacuation plan.
    • B. The route visitors used when they entered the building.
    • C. The shortest route regardless of the smoke.
    • D. The route that brings people closest to the fire for observation.

An exit must be safe in the actual conditions. A familiar or short route can become unusable, so directions must follow the evacuation plan and current hazards.

  3. 3A guard receives a complaint about another licensee’s conduct. What should they avoid?
    • A. Passing the complaint through the authorized process.
    • B. Hiding the complaint to protect a colleague.
    • C. Explaining the appropriate employer complaint channel.
    • D. Recording the information received without adding facts.

The required code prohibits withholding or suppressing complaints and reports about another licensee. Professional loyalty does not justify hiding a complaint.

  4. 4Why are numbered pages and an orderly sequence useful in a work notebook?
    • A. They remove the need to identify the notebook’s owner.
    • B. They allow the guard to remove pages without explanation.
    • C. They make the guard’s personal opinions become evidence of guilt.
    • D. They help preserve an identifiable chronological record.

An identifiable notebook and orderly entries help show continuity of the record. Numbering is not permission to remove pages or substitute opinion for fact.

  5. 5The sign-out procedure requires return of a loaned key. A departing worker cannot produce it. What should happen?
    • A. Mark the key returned to keep the register balanced.
    • B. Give the worker another key and omit both transactions.
    • C. Record and report the discrepancy through the site procedure.
    • D. Wait for the next shift without telling anyone about the key.

Key-control records should show the actual issue and return status. A missing key is a discrepancy to report, not a reason to falsify the register.

  6. 6The guard finishes a voluntary witness interview. Which closing statement is appropriate?
    • A. Explain the authorized next step without guaranteeing an outcome.
    • B. Tell the witness their answers will certainly stay secret from every investigator.
    • C. Ask the witness to make the story match another person’s account.
    • D. Promise that the witness’s preferred person will be convicted.

A professional close thanks the witness and explains what can properly happen next. The guard cannot guarantee a court result, manufacture agreement or make an absolute confidentiality promise that conflicts with lawful reporting.

  7. 7Who is identified in the property-related arrest branch of section 494(2)?
    • A. Any visitor who objects to another visitor’s behaviour.
    • B. An owner, lawful possessor or person authorized by either.
    • C. Any employee of a neighbouring property, without authorization.
    • D. Any licence holder, regardless of a connection to the property.

The property branch identifies the owner, person in lawful possession or their authorized person. It also requires finding a criminal offence on or in relation to that property and meeting the timing conditions.

  8. 8A loss-prevention worker is exempt from routine uniform requirements, but the employer requires a uniform. What follows?
    • A. The employer can waive the regulation’s uniform requirements.
    • B. The exemption allows any police-style uniform the worker prefers.
    • C. The worker may replace required security lettering with any title.
    • D. The uniform worn must still comply with the regulation.

Section 22 exempts specified classes, including loss prevention, from the general requirement to wear a uniform. If the employer requires one, section 22(2) says it must comply with section 21.

  9. 9A licensee changes the address supplied to the Registrar. What is the ordinary reporting deadline under AR 52/2010?
    • A. Report the covered change in writing within 30 days.
    • B. Wait until the current two-year licence expires.
    • C. Report it only if the employer changes as well.
    • D. Wait until a member of the public files a complaint.

Section 3(3) sets a 30-day written reporting period for changes covered by SSIA section 18. Do not confuse this with the 24-hour rule for a lost licence or specified arrests and charges.

  10. 10What should a guard assume after putting on the required protective equipment?
    • A. Other hazards and safe-work procedures still need attention.
    • B. The equipment removes the need for communication or assistance.
    • C. Any task is permitted even without the required training.
    • D. All hazards associated with the task have been eliminated.

Protective equipment is one part of safe work. It does not remove every hazard, replace training or make the communication and assistance procedures unnecessary.

About the test

About the Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) Practice

ABST stands for Alberta Basic Security Training. Alberta also recognizes the Accredited Basic Security Training Course through approved providers. The security service worker licence covers roles such as guarding, loss prevention and alarm response; it is separate from a business licence. Check the official licensing instructions for the category, work eligibility, English standard and records requirements that apply to you. A course enrolment or an online practice score is not authority to start licensed work.

The public manual is the third edition from 2014. It supplies a useful teaching structure, but some legal and administrative passages are older than current rules. We use the current Security Services and Investigators Act, its regulations, the Criminal Code and the Alberta trespass statutes for the cited legal questions. The current provincial worker page and OHS refusal guidance take precedence for their respective administrative and safety processes. The source edition and the specific provision remain visible so you can check the basis of an answer.

The seven topics cover industry and licensing, legal limits, patrol and access, communication, notes and evidence, emergency awareness, and personal safety. These are teaching categories based on the manual, not published exam weights. Every question is written independently. We do not reproduce the manual’s pre-tests or post-tests, paid provider material, competitor questions, recalled exam items, photographs or official diagrams. The examples teach decisions and conditions rather than offer tactical training.

Legal scenarios separate what the guard observed from an allegation, a site rule or a client preference. A security licence does not confer general police powers. Questions about arrest and force require the conditions of the cited law, and different Alberta trespass statutes must not be treated as interchangeable. This introductory bank does not determine the legality of a real incident or teach restraint, searches, weapons, device handling, firefighting or medical treatment. Use approved training and qualified advice for those tasks.

The French version is our translation of original learning material. The provincial manual and the Alberta administrative sources linked here are in English; a French practice interface does not change the province’s CLB 5 English requirement or guarantee an exam language. The federal Criminal Code has official English and French versions, linked as external references. This site is independent of Alberta Justice, Security Programs and every training provider, and it issues no training certificate, transcript or licence.

Study plan

How to prepare

  1. 1Start with the approved provider and the current licensing page. Confirm training eligibility and your official exam arrangements before relying on an independent practice schedule. The approved-provider list is external and can change.
  2. 2Read a topic’s own-words study notes, then answer its questions. Each explanation names a manual module or a current legal provision. Follow the official reference when the reason for an answer is unclear rather than memorize only its letter.
  3. 3For arrest and trespass scenarios, identify the actual statutory branch, the person’s property-specific authorization, the observation required and the timing conditions. Do not substitute a client’s request, uniform or suspicion for those requirements.
  4. 4Practise separating observation from inference in notes and reports. Preserve the original entry when making a correction, attribute a witness’s account and state what is unknown. The report-writing questions assess those decisions; they do not score a real professional report.
  5. 5Use the mixed exercises to revisit more than one teaching topic. Their length, internal target and topic balance are site choices. The questions are drawn from the same bank, so doing multiple formats does not add new question concepts or simulate an undisclosed official blueprint.
  6. 6After a missed answer, read the explanation and use missed-only retry. Flashcards support recall of the study notes, while the printable sheet keeps the explained key separate from the questions. Neither format verifies competence for a live incident.
  7. 7Before working, confirm that the correct licence has actually been issued and remains valid. A standard individual licence and a training licence have different portability and supervision rules. Check the licence guide for the sourced application steps and official fees.

FAQ

Alberta Security Guard (ABST) test questions people ask

Is this a free ABST practice test?

Yes. All 168 original questions, explanations, topic drills, mixed exercises, study notes, flashcards and printable sheets are free without registration. Official training, the provincial exam and a licence are separate processes that may have fees. We do not sell enrolment, issue credentials or claim access to the live exam.

Alberta — official source ↗

How many questions are on the ABST exam and how long does it take?

The current provincial licensing page does not publish those details. Confirm them with your approved provider or Security Programs. Our 50-question untimed mixed exercise is a study format we selected, with a 40/50 internal target. Those numbers must not be read as the official exam length, time limit or result.

Alberta — official source ↗

What is the official ABST passing grade?

Alberta says 80% or higher on the provincial final exam for the approved-training route. That is a separate assessment from this practice bank. Achieving the internal target here measures only answers to our questions; it cannot predict an official pass, replace a course or establish that you may work as a guard.

Alberta — official source ↗

Where can I find approved Alberta security training?

Use the province’s approved-training list linked in the official resources. Check the provider, course and current exam arrangements before enrolling. This site supplies independent revision rather than an approved course. A familiar company name or a practice site’s course advertisement does not establish current provincial approval.

Alberta — official source ↗

Does passing ABST immediately give me an Alberta security licence?

No. Training completion and licensing are separate. Follow the province’s application, records, identification, photo and payment instructions and wait for the applicable licence. A practice result or course receipt is not a worker licence. The separate training-licence route requires an employer application and its own conditions.

Alberta — official source ↗

How much does the Alberta security guard licence cost?

The province lists CA$100 for an individual security service licence, valid for two years. Participating registries add a CA$9 service charge. Course, exam and police-check charges are separate; confirm those with the responsible provider. Do not treat the licence amount as an all-in training package. All study tools on this site remain free.

Alberta — official source ↗

Can I study ABST in French on this site?

Yes. Every original question, explained answer and topic note has a Canadian French version with the same answer positions. Provincial sources are labeled English where applicable. The translation does not change the CLB 5 English licensing standard or promise a French provincial exam. Ask your approved provider about actual assessment arrangements.

Alberta — official source ↗

Are the questions copied from official or recalled ABST exams?

No. We write original learning scenarios from our own notes on public sources. The 2014 manual supplies the teaching framework; current law and official guidance take priority where rules have changed. We do not reproduce its pre-tests, paid provider banks or recalled items. Follow the cited provision when checking an explanation.

Alberta — official source ↗

Can I download ABST practice questions and answers as a PDF?

The free printable page supplies 50 original questions and a separate explained answer key. Use the browser’s print or Save as PDF option. It is our learning sheet, not the provincial test or a copy of the official participant manual. The full bank remains available through the interactive sets and topics.

How do I arrange a rewrite, challenge or review?

The current province page directs these enquiries to Security Programs. Confirm your circumstances with them rather than rely on an old policy excerpt or an independent site’s attempt limit. We have not verified a universal current rewrite count or wait time and do not present either as fact.
