Why older summaries can disagree
ICBC’s transition page identifies the lower supervisor age and immediate-family passenger exemption as changes effective October 19, 2026. An older printed summary can still describe the previous conditions. Use the dated transition guidance alongside your licence conditions.
The age of the learner and the age of the supervisor answer different questions. Being old enough to apply for an L does not make someone qualified to supervise another learner.

Original practice scenarios
A learner wants to drive with a qualified supervisor and two unrelated friends. The supervisor is exempt from the passenger count, but two friends are not. Change the passenger arrangement before practising.
A proposed supervisor is 22 and has a Class 5 licence that still carries the new zero-alcohol and zero-drug restriction. Age alone is insufficient: check the qualification and restriction conditions as well.
A supervisor offers to handle all navigation while the learner uses a hands-free call. Supervising does not remove the learner’s electronic-device restriction. Arrange the communication before driving.
Keep road-test eligibility separate
Under the current transition guidance, the minimum L phase is 12 months for drivers under 25, or 9 months for drivers aged 25 or older. Check ICBC’s eligibility and driving-record requirements before arranging the Class 7 road test. This waiting period does not replace the restrictions on every practice trip.

Agree on who is supervising, who will be in the vehicle, when the trip ends and where the L sign is displayed. If any condition is unclear, resolve it while parked. Do not let an event timetable or a navigation suggestion decide whether your licence permits a trip.
Review the licensing questions to practise reading conditions accurately, and use the road-test guide for the later booking and vehicle checks. A correct quiz response does not confirm that a particular driver, licence or trip meets ICBC requirements.
