Sample OPC Travel Counsellor questions

Tap a question to see the answer. The full interactive test is at the top of the page.
  1. 1A customer is going to a country that requires a visa. Which duty requires telling the customer?
    • A. The duty to inform
    • B. The security bond duty
    • C. The bookkeeping duty
    • D. The road safety duty

Relevant information about required documents is part of prudent service. Check current requirements for the traveller with the competent authorities; do not promise a visa or guaranteed admission.

  2. 2Which of these must be given to the customer BEFORE a distance contract is made?
    • A. The agency's profit
    • B. The other group members' names
    • C. The counsellor's salary
    • D. The cancellation conditions

Before a distance contract, the agent gives, among other things, the agency's contact details, a description of the services, a price breakdown, the total price, payment terms and cancellation conditions.

  3. 3When contributions are actually collected and remitted under s. 40, what percentage is deducted as management fees?
    • A. 1%
    • B. 10%
    • C. 5%
    • D. 15%

Section 40 provides 5% of collected contributions. This does not authorize arbitrary extra customer charges or net collection during the current rebate.

  4. 4When may the agent take the commission out of the trust account?
    • A. At the end of every month, whatever the file
    • B. As soon as the customer makes a first deposit
    • C. After paying the customer's suppliers
    • D. Before paying the tour operator, to be safe

The agent may take commission and service fees from the account only after paying the suppliers of the customer's services.

  5. 5For how many travel agents can a certified counsellor work at the same time?
    • A. Three at most, under the Regulation
    • B. As many as he likes, after telling the Office
    • C. Only one
    • D. Two, if they are in different cities

The counsellor acts exclusively for one licensed agent and is not bound by an employment or service contract to more than one agent.

  6. 6What minimum type does the Regulation require for written information on taxes and the contribution?
    • A. 14-point Times
    • B. 10-point Helvetica
    • C. 6-point Arial
    • D. 8-point Helvetica

In written ads, the information on including or excluding taxes and the contribution is set in Helvetica of at least 10 points.

  7. 7Which payment form falls within the definition of funds in Regulation s. 21?
    • A. Airline loyalty points
    • B. A verbal promise to pay
    • C. An agency discount coupon
    • D. A credit card payment

The definition includes the monetary equivalent of card payments as well as cash and negotiable instruments. It does not remove the separate direct-transmission arrangement in s. 22.

  8. 8How are a package's airport fees treated?
    • A. As the customer's personal costs, kept off the invoice
    • B. As a tax the agency need not show at all
    • C. As the agency's own service fees
    • D. As a tourist service, like the hotel nights

OPC’s current calculation page includes airport and airline fees in the tourism-service contribution base. Calculation and invoice display are separate from the current rebate, which offsets net collection from the customer.

  9. 9A supplier default prevents use of four nights of a paid seven-night related service. Under s. 43.7(b), how is that related service’s refund assessed?
    • A. The full stay price, regardless of nights used
    • B. A flat $500 per traveller
    • C. No refund, part of it was used
    • D. In proportion to the unused nights

For the partly used related service, s. 43.7(b) provides a refund proportional to the unused part, subject to the applicable conditions. It does not promise a full refund for services already used.

  10. 10When must the refund conditions be given to the customer in writing?
    • A. When handing over the tickets
    • B. Only if the trip is cancelled
    • C. Before accepting a deposit
    • D. After the customer leaves

Refund or non-refund conditions are given in writing before accepting a deposit, unless they appear in a brochure given to the customer.

About the test

About the Québec Travel Counsellor Exam (OPC certificate, conseiller en voyages)

A counsellor dealing with clients of a general-licence agency normally needs a certificate, including part-time and exclusive-contract outside counsellors. OPC identifies an exemption for employees of restricted-licence agencies. Agency managers and licence holders have separate obligations; this bank does not replace their route.

ITHQ administers the online exam with audio/video supervision. Its current page lists CA$71 per person and French and English. The English page restricts English service to people covered by exceptions in the Charter of the French language. Confirm your applicable conditions with the provider before booking.

The official examination covers both manual modules. We link the provider’s fourth-edition downloads without reproducing their chapters or questions. A download-folder date is not the legal currency date of its contents. Current rules use the Regulation updated July 1, 2026 and Québec statutes updated October 15, 2026.

Twelve teaching topics cover licences, certificates, trust accounts, receipts, FICAV, advertising, prices, cancellation, distance contracts and client duties. The organization is editorial, without a claimed official weighting. Explanations retain conditions and exceptions; a possible remedy is not presented as automatically payable compensation.

Original unofficial practice, editorially checked against official sources and not reviewed by a licensed professional. No affiliation with or endorsement by OPC or ITHQ is claimed. Sets, topics, mocks, draws, cards and printouts reuse the same concepts and issue neither certification nor a pass prediction.

Every website feature is free. Official exam enrolment, certificate issuance and renewal are separate. We collect no payment, identity documents or medical information for those processes. French official sources are identified in the English edition; our teaching translation is not an official legal text.

Study plan

How to prepare

  1. 1Start with a set of 24, then check uncertain answers and their conditions against the source. Remembering an option letter does not demonstrate understanding of the rule.
  2. 2Distinguish the licensed agent, certified counsellor and agency manager. Identify the person, client and licence type before applying a duty.
  3. 3Separate notice periods, document-delivery deadlines and cancellation rights. The starting event and exceptions matter as much as the number of days.
  4. 4For FICAV, distinguish the statutory schedule from the current rebate. Displaying a calculation with its offset does not create a net contribution to collect. A collective event ceiling is not a guaranteed minimum payout.
  5. 5Use both official manual modules and the provider’s current instructions. Our topics and questions are independent revision aids, without a claim to reproduce the complete curriculum or real difficulty.
  6. 6The 33/50 reference is an internal rounded target for our 50 questions. Because the real count is unconfirmed, do not convert a result into a pass probability or authorization to sell.
