  1. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

Red eight-sided sign with white lettering

You are driving toward this sign at an intersection. What must you do?

Stop completely and go only when it is safe

A red eight-sided sign means stop. You must come to a full stop and stay stopped until you can go safely.

  2. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

Downward-pointing white triangle with a wide red border

You approach this sign. To whom must you give the right-of-way?

Traffic not facing the sign and all pedestrians crossing

At a yield sign you let traffic that is not facing the sign go first, along with every pedestrian in the intersection or crosswalk.

  3. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

White square with a red circle and a white horizontal bar

    What does this sign mean?

    Do not enter

A white square with a red circle and a white horizontal bar means you must not enter that road or lane.

  4. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

Black rectangle with a white arrow pointing right

    What does this sign mean?

Traffic may move only in the arrow's direction

A black rectangle with a white arrow marks a one-way road: travel only the way the arrow points.

  5. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

White square with a black island shape and an arrow passing to its right

You see this sign before a median. What does it mean?

A divider is ahead, keep to the right

This traffic direction sign warns of a divider ahead and tells you to pass it on the right side.

  6. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

White square with arrows pointing up and down

What does this regulatory sign indicate?

Traffic is moving in both directions

The two-way traffic sign tells you that traffic on this road also travels in the oncoming direction.

  7. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

White rectangle reading MAXIMUM 50 km/h

You pass this sign on a snowy evening and the road is icy. How fast may you legally drive?

Only as fast as is safe for the conditions

A posted limit is the maximum in ideal conditions. Driving at a speed that is unsafe for the conditions is illegal, even if it is under the limit.

  8. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

White square with a green circle around a left-turn arrow

    What does this sign mean?

    Left turn only

A green circle around a left-turn arrow is a permissive sign: the only movement allowed is a left turn.

  9. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

White square sign with a green ring around a snowmobile symbol

What does this sign tell drivers on a route?

    Motorized snow vehicles are allowed

The green circle makes this a permissive route sign: snow vehicles may use this route.

  10. Regulatory signs and speed limits · Road sign

White square, U-shaped arrow, red circle and slash

    What does this sign mean?

    No U-turn

The red circle and slash over a U-shaped arrow prohibits U-turns.

FAQ

NWT Class 7 flashcards: questions

Where do these flashcards come from?

468 cards are points from our study notes, which we write from the official NWT Driver's Manual (Basic Handbook); the front names the rule and the back states it. The other 42 cards show a road sign drawing on the front and its meaning on the back, as in our road sign questions.

How should I use the flashcards?

Read the front, answer in your head, then flip. Choose "Got it" only if you knew it; otherwise choose "Review again". At the end, go through the "Review again" cards once more, or pick a single topic from the list to focus on it.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, on this device only. Cards marked "Review again" stay in the "Needs review" list, and every card you rate counts towards your topic map on the exam overview. Nothing is sent to us with your name; you can clear it from the overview page.

Are flashcards enough to pass the NWT Class 7 test?

No. Flashcards help you remember the rules, but the test asks multiple-choice questions. Use our practice tests and mock exams as well, and study the official material from Government of the Northwest Territories, Department of Infrastructure — Driver and Vehicle Services.
