Practise graduated licensing →Identify the licence stage before applying a restriction
Class 7 is the learner stage. Class 5N follows the road test and the required licence-card upgrade; passing the test alone is not the card upgrade. The newly licensed stage lasts at least two full years and requires approved driver education for progression.
The handbook defines a supervising driver as holding a valid Nova Scotia licence and no longer being subject to the GDL program. The later restricted individual stage, Class 5R with Condition 47, has different restrictions. It does not make the holder an eligible supervising driver. Do not treat any person who has passed a road test as automatically able to supervise a 5N driver overnight.

For ordinary 5N driving, the handbook limits the front to one passenger and the rear to the number of seat belts. Zero alcohol and drug levels also apply. Having a spare belt does not remove the curfew.
Between midnight and 5 a.m., the supervision exception requires a supervising driver with a valid regular licence in the front seat and no other passengers. Under a Registry exemption, the driver travels alone and follows the permitted times and places in the letter.

Original worked cases
At 2 p.m., a 5N driver plans to carry one front passenger and two rear passengers with separate belts. This fits the described ordinary seating limits, subject to the other licence and safety rules.
At 1 a.m., a qualified regular-licence supervisor sits in front, while a friend wants to ride in the back. The supervision exception does not allow that additional passenger.
A driver needs to travel to an early shift and has applied for an exemption. Applying does not establish approval. If granted, the driver must carry the letter and follow its conditions without passengers.
Get the exemption from the Registry, not from an employer
The 2026 handbook lists work travel, school and volunteering as a firefighter or ground-search-and-rescue member as reasons to apply. It describes a fee, an application through the Registry or Access Nova Scotia and an approval letter that must be carried during exempted driving.
An employer’s schedule or school timetable is not the exemption itself. Confirm the current process with the Registry before relying on an exception. Our free GDL questions help distinguish these conditions; they do not determine individual licence eligibility.
