Sharing the road: key rules to remember

Our summary of what the official handbook says on this topic, in our own words. Read it before or after the practice questions above, then check the original chapter. Read the official chapter ↗

Large trucks

  • A truck can carry 50 or more times the weight of a car; uses up to 18 gear changes; avoid forcing it to slow down.
  • Trucks slow uphill and speed up downhill. They need longer to stop; don't cut in right after passing.
  • No interior mirror; side mirrors get dirty. Drive with headlights on.
  • Trucks and buses have trouble with sharp right turns; give them room; they may swing into the other half of the street you are on.
  • The "no-zone": large blind spots at both sides, the front and deep behind. Before pulling in front after passing, see the whole cab in your rear-view mirror. If you can't see the truck's mirrors, the driver can't see you.

Snow plows

  • Slow down and stay back. Most plow crashes are rear-end collisions.
  • Slow to 60 km/h passing plows or highway equipment stopped with blue and amber lights flashing. Moving plows may be passed when safe (no 60 km/h limit then).
  • Plows pull over about every 10 km to let traffic pass. Major highways are cleared within six hours after a storm ends.

Snowmobiles, ATVs and golf carts

  • Small, low, hard to see; often out in storms; children may drive them. Expect sudden crossings. Some municipal bylaws allow them on streets.

Emergency vehicles

  • Emergency vehicles with flashing lights and sirens have the right of way.
  • Pull as close as possible to the right edge immediately and do not enter the next intersection until it passes (unless a peace officer directs otherwise). On one-way streets, pull to the nearest curb, left or right.
  • At an intersection, stop and let it through. Lights but no siren: give the same courtesy.
  • Stopped emergency vehicle with lights: slow to 60 km/h when passing. Not required on the opposite side of a divided highway; required on the opposite side of an undivided highway.
  • Never follow an emergency vehicle.

Farm equipment

  • On highways and grid roads from early spring to late fall; travel 10 to 40 km/h. Pass only when safe; you can pull onto an approach or the right edge to let it pass.

School buses

  • Rear-end collisions are the most frequent school bus crash type.
  • Amber flashing lights: slow down, proceed with caution. Red flashing lights: stop. Oncoming on an undivided highway: also stop.
  • Stop no closer than 5 m (15 ft.) from the front or back of the bus. Don't move until the driver turns off the red lights and retracts the stop arm; check all children have crossed.
  • Passing a bus with red lights flashing: minimum fine $360.
  • Not required to stop: opposite direction on a divided highway; communities with bylaws banning stop arms/red lights; buses showing only four-way hazard lamps (use caution).

Motorcycles

  • Most have headlights on all the time. Check twice before turning or changing lanes.
  • Same three-second following distance; more on wet surfaces. Leave room before pulling in after passing.
  • Never share a lane beside a motorcycle; illegal and dangerous. Pass a motorcycle or bicycle in your lane as you would a car.
  • New riders: red L placard (learner), green N placard (novice) on the licence plate.

Motorcycles (Ch. 3.24)

  • Two motorcycles may share a lane but riding directly alongside is not recommended. Motorcycles may not ride beside other types of vehicles in a lane.
  • Riders and passengers must wear approved helmets; without a deflecting windshield, eye protection too.

Bicycles

  • Cyclists follow the same rules as other vehicles. Enter a bike lane only when safe, to turn.
  • Pass with room; watch hand signals (right arm out may mean a right turn); when turning left, wait for oncoming bikes; don't pass then cut in front to turn right; check before opening doors.
  • Cyclists have no brake lights. Experienced cyclists travel 25 to 35 km/h on the flat and up to 50 km/h downhill.
  • Cyclists may steer around grates, potholes, gravel. Don't honk unnecessarily when passing.
  • E-bikes: treat like other cyclists.

E-scooters

  • Allowed only where a community bylaw permits. No registration or licence, but riders must be at least 16 and wear an approved helmet.

Tow trucks

  • Stopped tow or assistance vehicle with amber, or amber and blue, lights flashing: slow to 60 km/h; not required for the opposite side of a divided highway; required on an undivided highway.
