Ch. 3 Signs, signals and road markings, pp. 27–30 (Signs; Regulatory signs; Lane use; Turn control; Parking; Reserved lane signs)

  • Signs are read three ways: shape, colour, printed message.
  • Legend: green circle = permitted action; red circle with slash = action not permitted. School zone signs are fluorescent yellow-green.
  • Regulatory signs state driving laws; disregarding them is an offence under the Yukon Motor Vehicles Act, with penalties.
  • Stop: full stop, continue only when safe. Yield: give right-of-way to vehicles and crossing pedestrians.
  • Maximum speed sign = fastest allowed in good conditions; a separate sign warns of a speed limit change ahead.
  • Do not enter; do not go this way; one way (shows direction of traffic on the cross street).
  • Winter tires or chains must be used when that sign is displayed.
  • Disaster route sign: stay off during major disasters; road may be reserved for emergency vehicles.
  • Slower traffic: move into right lane. Keep right unless passing. Do not pass. Two-way traffic, keep right unless passing. Keep right of the divider.
  • No stopping between here and the next no-stopping sign; a timed version applies during posted times only.
  • No bicycle riding beyond this point. No right turn on red light.
  • Lane use signs: above the lane or beside it before the intersection; you must follow the arrows; you may not move into or out of the lane while in the intersection. Variants: left only, straight only, straight or left, straight or right, both directions must turn left (no through traffic), both lanes must turn left.
  • Turn control signs: mounted directly above the intersection; follow the arrow (left only; straight only; right or left only; no right turns during posted times).
  • Parking signs: illegal parking can bring fines, towing or both. Time-limited parking; no parking between here and the next sign or intersection (also timed version); disabled parking only for vehicles with the permit carrying a person with a disability.
  • Reserved lanes: white diamond painted on the road; signs over or beside lanes for buses or HOVs; HOV signs may give the minimum number of occupants; a sign can warn that the curb lane of the cross street ahead is reserved.
