Practise learner licence conditions →Check the driver, seat and finish time
| Check | Before a supervised car trip |
|---|---|
| Supervisor | A qualified supervisor aged 18 or older with a full Class 5 licence or higher must sit in the front passenger seat. |
| Driving hours | No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. |
| Alcohol | The learner must have zero blood alcohol. |
| Passengers | Do not carry more people than the vehicle has seatbelts. |
A probationary licence is different from a full licence
Ask the proposed supervisor what licence they actually hold. Someone who can drive alone on a probationary licence is not automatically qualified to supervise a learner. The relevant check is the full licence and the supervision conditions, rather than a family relationship or confidence behind the wheel.
Agree on a route and a return time before leaving. Allow a margin for a late appointment or traffic. If the return could run past midnight, arrange for a fully licensed driver to drive instead; do not use the deadline as a reason to hurry.

Original worked examples
Late pickup: you want to drive home at 12:20 a.m. while your parent sits beside you. The qualified supervisor does not remove the midnight restriction. Change the driver or the travel arrangement.
Newly licensed sibling: your sibling can drive independently but still holds Class 5-GDL. That is different from the full licence required for supervising your car practice.
Extra friend: everyone fits physically, but one passenger would have no seatbelt. The seating condition is not satisfied. Organize another vehicle rather than treating a short trip as an exception.
Passing the knowledge test is only one step
The knowledge test and vision test lead to purchasing a learner licence. They do not authorize solo car driving. For the probationary Class 5 stage, Alberta requires a minimum age of 16, at least 12 months holding Class 7 and a successful road test, with consent where required.
Keep application questions separate from trip questions. The existing licence guide covers documents and the registry visit. This page helps you check a proposed practice drive after you are licensed.

After the licensing quiz, describe the condition you missed in one sentence: who may supervise, where that person sits, when the learner may drive or how passengers are seated. Then change the fictional trip so that condition is met.
Use your licence and current Alberta guidance for the full conditions. These car-practice examples do not cover every vehicle a Class 7 holder may operate, and a practice score does not establish permission or readiness to drive.
