In Alberta the Class 5 road test is the step from a Class 7 learner's licence to a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, the licence that lets you drive without a supervisor. Passenger vehicle road tests are given by driver examiners working for registry agents, so booking and fees go through a registry agent rather than the government.

This guide covers who can take the test, how to book it, what it costs, what to bring and check on the car, how the examiner scores you, the errors that fail you on the spot, a checklist for the day and what happens after a pass or a fail. Each fact links to the Government of Alberta page or guide it comes from. Registry agents set their own road test fees and rules, so read your registry's road test information sheet as well.

  3. Book with a registry agent

  4. Read the road test information sheet

Registry agents have a road test information sheet that sets out eligibility, vehicle requirements, required documents, fees and their cancellation and no-show policies. Your confirmation letter has more details.

  6. Pass the vision test and buy your licence

After you pass, a registry agent tests your vision and may ask for a medical report. You then buy your Class 5-GDL licence card and get a temporary licence valid for 30 days or until the card arrives, which should take 21 business days.

What the examiner assesses

The skill areas below are summarized in our own words from the official material. The examiner watches each one throughout the drive.

Common reasons people fail

Day-of checklist

Our checklist, built from the official requirements and skill list above. Tick each item before you leave home and again before the examiner gets in.

  • Class 7 held for the full year, fines paid, booking confirmed and the registry's information sheet read.
  • Car legal and safe: plated, registered, insured and meeting the registry's vehicle requirements.
  • Valid ID and any other documents the information sheet asks for; glasses or contacts if you need them.
  • Mirror and blind-spot checks before every lane change, turn and pull-out.
  • Full stops at stop signs and before every right turn on red.
  • Speed at the limit and right for the conditions, never so slow that you hold up traffic.
  • Slow down and look both ways at uncontrolled intersections.
  • Parking practised until you can park legally without touching the curb.

Results and your next licence

If you pass the road test and the vision test, you buy a probationary Class 5-GDL licence. You hold it for at least 2 years: no more passengers than seat belts, zero alcohol and drugs, a suspension at 8 demerit points, no upgrade to Class 1, 2, 3 or 4, and you may not supervise a learner. You get a full Class 5 licence once you are 18 or older, have finished the 24 months and have had no suspensions or demerits in the last 12 months; an approved driver training program can cut the probationary period by up to 6 months. If you fail: rebooking

If you fail, book a new road test through a registry agent. Alberta.ca does not publish a waiting period between attempts; the registry agent sets the road test fee and its cancellation and no-show rules. Source: alberta.ca — Driver's road test

Prepare for the test

Practise the rules first: the road test assumes you know every sign and rule from the knowledge test. Our free practice tests, simulator and guides are written from the official material.
