    3. Near flammable or explosive dust or vapours
    4. Within 10 m of a site office
  3. A propane heater is placed near a tarp that encloses a floor. Which rule applies?

    1. The heater must be placed so it cannot set the tarp on fire
    2. The heater must be set in front of the floor's exit to warm the way in
    3. The heater must be covered with a tarp to keep the heat in
    4. The heater can go anywhere if it is turned off at night
  4. Which type of temporary heater is banned on a construction site?

    1. A compliant natural gas heater
    2. A properly installed oil heater
    3. A gasoline or naphtha heater
    4. A CSA-certified electric heater
  5. A mechanic must repair an excavator whose boom is raised. What must he do first?

    1. Stand to the side of the boom instead of under it
    2. Work fast, before the hydraulics drop
    3. Ask the operator to hold the boom up
    4. Make sure the raised boom is securely blocked
  6. Which type of portable fire extinguisher does the Code require on sites?

    1. A charged, ULC-listed ABC extinguisher
    2. A Class K kitchen extinguisher
    3. A water-only extinguisher by the door
    4. A bucket of sand by the exit
  7. A gas generator runs inside a closed building, and the mechanical ventilation fails. What should be done?

    1. Keep going if the workers wear dust masks
    2. Shut the engine off right away until ventilation is back
    3. Open a door and let the generator keep running until the next break
    4. Run the engine at half speed until the end of the day
  8. Before cutting with a torch into an old tank that may have held gasoline, what is needed?

    1. The tank owner's and foreman's verbal OK
    2. An ABC extinguisher placed 50 m away from the tank
    3. Air samples showing the work can be done safely
    4. The welder's 30-hour course certificate
  9. A plasterer wants to use stilts to finish a ceiling. What does the Code say?

    1. It is allowed if the floor is clean, dry and free of obstacles
    2. Working on stilts or similar devices is banned at all times
    3. It is allowed if the plasterer wears a safety harness
    4. It is allowed for stilts under 60 cm high
  10. A worker removes a saw guard because it "slows the work down". What does the Code provide?

    1. Removal is allowed for cuts that take less than a minute each
    2. Moving parts must stay protected by a firmly attached device
    3. Removal is allowed if an experienced co-worker watches the saw for the whole cut
    4. Removal is allowed if the worker has more than ten years of experience
  11. On a bench grinder, what is the maximum gap between the tool rest and the wheel?

    1. 3 mm
    2. 25 mm
    3. 50 mm
    4. 10 mm
  12. What is the purpose of the safety devices on a machine's moving parts?

    1. To let the machine work faster while staying safe
    2. To lower the machine's noise below the 85 dBA limit
    3. To block access to the danger zone while the machine runs
    4. To let the operator leave the controls without stopping the machine

Tools, machines and fire prevention: key rules to remember

Our summary of what the official handbook says on this topic, in our own words. Read it before or after the practice questions above, then check the original chapter. Read the official chapter ↗

Machine guards

  • Moving parts of machines are protected by safety devices that prevent access to the danger zone during operation.
  • Guards must be firmly attached, not hinder the operator, allow maintenance and not create hazards themselves.

Grinding wheels

  • A wheel 50 mm in diameter or more has a guard suited to the work.
  • The tool rest is no more than 3 mm from the wheel.
  • The wheel is inspected before mounting for cracks and defects, and run below the manufacturer's maximum speed.

Engines and repairs

  • No internal combustion engine is used near flammable or explosive dust or vapours.
  • Inside a closed structure, exhaust is removed at the source; if mechanical ventilation stops, the engine is shut down at once and restarted only when ventilation is back.
  • Before a repair, raised parts are securely blocked.

Temporary heating

  • Gasoline or naphtha heaters are banned.
  • A combustion heater is placed so it cannot set tarps or combustible materials on fire, is protected against tipping and must not block exits.
  • In a confined area, there must be enough air for combustion and adequate ventilation.

Pressurized gas, welding and cutting

  • Compressed air or gas piping is protected against impact and clearly identified.
  • Welding and cutting are banned near combustible materials or where there are flammable dust, gases or vapours, unless precautions prevent fire or explosion.
  • No welding, cutting or open flame on a container that may hold a flammable substance, unless air samples show it is safe (or CSA W117.2 is followed).

Fire protection

  • Fire-fighting equipment is approved, easy to reach, clearly marked, protected from damage and freezing, and accessible to firefighters at all times.
  • Portable extinguishers are ULC-listed ABC units, charged, and show the name of the person responsible for maintenance and the date of the last check.

Stilts

  • Working on stilts or similar devices is banned at all times.
