  1. TICO, the Act and who must register · TICO and the law

    Regulator

The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) is Ontario's travel regulator; it administers the Travel Industry Act, 2002 and O. Reg. 26/05 for travel retailers, websites and travel wholesalers (tour operators) in Ontario.

  2. TICO, the Act and who must register · TICO and the law

    Registration

  3. TICO, the Act and who must register · Definitions (in force)

    Travel agent

a person who sells, to consumers, travel services provided by another person.

  4. TICO, the Act and who must register · Definitions (in force)

  5. TICO, the Act and who must register · Definitions (in force)

transportation or sleeping accommodation for a traveller, tourist or sightseer, or other services combined with that transportation or accommodation.

  6. TICO, the Act and who must register · Definitions (in force)

    Unproclaimed changes

2017 amendments that would rename these "travel seller" and "travel salesperson" are not yet in force; the current terms remain travel agent and travel wholesaler.

  7. TICO, the Act and who must register · Definitions (in force)

    Holding out

    s. 4: no one may act, or hold themselves out as available to act, as a travel agent or travel wholesaler unless registered.

  8. TICO, the Act and who must register · Accommodation

    Accommodation

Accommodation means any room used for lodging plus related facilities and services for the traveller, but not meals.

  9. TICO, the Act and who must register · Exempt persons (if they do not otherwise act as agents or wholesalers)

    Accommodation suppliers

End suppliers of accommodation who also provide local travel services bought from others.

  10. TICO, the Act and who must register · Exempt persons (if they do not otherwise act as agents or wholesalers)

    Other end suppliers

The separate conditional exemption in s. 2(2)2 covers certain other end suppliers (not airlines, cruise lines or bus lines) providing bought-in local services, with no more than 25% taken more than 30 days ahead. Do not apply this payment condition to the separate accommodation category.

FAQ

TICO Certification flashcards: questions

Where do these flashcards come from?

Each of the 155 cards is one point from our study notes, which we write from the official Travel Industry Act, 2002 and Regulation 26/05. The front names the rule; the back states it. Nothing on the cards is added beyond those notes.

How should I use the flashcards?

Read the front, answer in your head, then flip. Choose "Got it" only if you knew it; otherwise choose "Review again". At the end, go through the "Review again" cards once more, or pick a single topic from the list to focus on it.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, on this device only. Cards marked "Review again" stay in the "Needs review" list, and every card you rate counts towards your topic map on the exam overview. Nothing is sent to us with your name; you can clear it from the overview page.

Are flashcards enough to pass the TICO Certification test?

No. Flashcards help you remember the rules, but the test asks multiple-choice questions. Use our practice tests and mock exams as well, and study the official material from Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO).
