The AZ written test is the Class A knowledge test you take at a DriveTest centre before MELT and the road test. This page gives you 100 questions in one sitting, drawn evenly from every topic in our Class A bank: coupling and uncoupling, combination braking, off-tracking and backing, daily inspections, size and weight limits, hours of service, cargo securement, signs and the rules for keeping your licence.
A long run shows you where your knowledge is thin. When you finish, sort your misses by topic and take that topic's practice test next. The written test is not timed, so practise reading every option carefully rather than racing; most wrong answers on truck tests come from missing one condition such as a weight, a distance or a number of hours.

FAQ
AZ written test – 100 questions: common questions
Is the AZ written test hard?
It is mostly about numbers and procedures that are easy to mix up, such as hours-of-service limits, size limits and the order of coupling steps. If you can score 90 percent here, you are well prepared.
Is the written test in French or other languages?
DriveTest offers knowledge tests in English or French at a minimum, and computerized commercial knowledge tests in 20 languages. This practice site is available in English and French.
Do I take the air brake test at the same time?
The Z air brake endorsement has its own knowledge test and practical test. Many AZ candidates write both on the same visit; practise with our separate air brake (Z) test.
