In Manitoba you need an air brake endorsement to drive a vehicle with air brakes or air-over-hydraulic brakes, except farm-registered Class 3 or 5 vehicles. The endorsement takes an air brake knowledge test and a practical test on a vehicle you supply. You need at least a 5L licence before you can write the knowledge test, which has a 30-minute limit and is offered in English, French or Punjabi. Adjusting manual slack adjusters is a separate S endorsement.
This page draws 50 questions from our bank written from the MPI Air Brake Manual dated February 2026: the compressor, governor and tanks, service and spring brake chambers, the yellow and red control knobs, the trailer brake subsystem and tractor protection, foundation brakes and brake fade, and the inspection tests MPI expects you to perform. Manitoba's values are not the same as other provinces': the low air warning must come on before 55 psi, and the leak limit is 3 psi a minute for a straight truck or bus.

FAQ
MPI air brake test: common questions
How many questions are on the MPI air brake test?
MPI does not publish the number of questions or a pass mark for the air brake knowledge test. It has a 30-minute limit like other knowledge tests.

Yes. There is no separate air-over-hydraulic test: you pass the air brake knowledge test and a regular single-unit air brake practical test.
What should I bring to the air brake practical test?
Wheel chocks, a watch with a second hand, the size and type of every brake chamber, a way to hold the brake pedal down, and tools to mark and measure pushrod stroke (not needed for motor coaches).
