Front and back of each card, as in the deck above. The cards come from our own notes on the official handbook; check anything you are unsure of with Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development — Confined Spaces Regulation (O. Reg. 632/05) and guideline.
  1. What is a confined space · definition

    definition — key rule 1

A confined space is a fully or partially enclosed space that is not both designed and constructed for continuous human occupancy, and in which atmospheric hazards may occur because of its construction, location, contents or the work done in it.

  2. What is a confined space · definition

    Both conditions must apply

a space designed and built for continuous occupancy (an office, control room, walk-in freezer, mechanical room) is not a confined space even if a hazard could occur.

  3. What is a confined space · definition

    definition — key rule 3

The regulation applies to all workplaces covered by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, except underwater diving work; firefighters doing emergency work are exempt from most sections but must still be protected.

  4. What is a confined space · definition

    definition — key rule 4

"Related work" means work done near a confined space in direct support of the work inside it.

  5. What is a confined space · Confined spaces

    To decide, ask three questions

is the space fully or partially enclosed; is it not both designed and constructed for continuous human occupancy; might an atmospheric hazard occur?

  6. What is a confined space · Confined spaces

Examples that are not designed for continuous occupancy

storage tanks, tank cars, process vessels, boilers, vats, bins, silos, pits, pump wells, sewers, pipes, ducts, flues, ovens and chimneys.

  7. What is a confined space · Confined spaces

Confined spaces — key rule 3

Entry occurs as soon as any part of a person's body breaks the plane of the opening.

  8. What is a confined space · Confined spaces

Confined spaces — key rule 4

The regulation does not apply to openings too small for a person's body to pass through, but the general duty to take every reasonable precaution still applies.

  9. What is a confined space · Confined spaces

Confined spaces — key rule 5

Controlling a hazard (for example with ventilation) does not stop a space from being a confined space; only eliminating the possibility of an atmospheric hazard does.

  10. What is a confined space · B.C. definition

    B.C. definition — key rule 1

In B.C. a confined space is enclosed or partly enclosed, not designed or intended for continuous human occupancy, has limited or restricted entry or exit that may complicate first aid, evacuation or rescue, and is large enough for a worker to enter to do assigned work.

FAQ

Confined Space flashcards: questions

Where do these flashcards come from?

Each of the 171 cards is one point from our study notes, which we write from the official Guideline for working in confined spaces (Ontario). The front names the rule; the back states it. Nothing on the cards is added beyond those notes.

How should I use the flashcards?

Read the front, answer in your head, then flip. Choose "Got it" only if you knew it; otherwise choose "Review again". At the end, go through the "Review again" cards once more, or pick a single topic from the list to focus on it.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, on this device only. Cards marked "Review again" stay in the "Needs review" list, and every card you rate counts towards your topic map on the exam overview. Nothing is sent to us with your name; you can clear it from the overview page.

Are flashcards enough to pass the Confined Space test?

No. Flashcards help you remember the rules, but the test asks multiple-choice questions. Use our practice tests and mock exams as well, and study the official material from Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development — Confined Spaces Regulation (O. Reg. 632/05) and guideline.
