All 24 questions in this test

Every original question, with optional answers, explanations and official references. Open an answer to study, or take the test above for instant feedback.

  1. For the Trespass to Premises Act, what makes someone an authorized representative of the owner?

    1. The person once visited the property with a customer.
    2. The person holds any licence issued in another province.
    3. The person simply wears clothing marked SECURITY.
    4. The owner authorizes the person to give notice not to trespass.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: The owner authorizes the person to give notice not to trespass.

The Act’s definition concerns authorization by the owner to give notice not to trespass. A uniform, unrelated visit or licence alone does not supply that property-specific authorization.

  2. Smoke blocks the usual exit route. What should guide the guard’s directions?

    1. An available safe route under the evacuation plan.
    2. The route visitors used when they entered the building.
    3. The shortest route regardless of the smoke.
    4. The route that brings people closest to the fire for observation.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: An available safe route under the evacuation plan.

An exit must be safe in the actual conditions. A familiar or short route can become unusable, so directions must follow the evacuation plan and current hazards.

  3. A guard receives a complaint about another licensee’s conduct. What should they avoid?

    1. Passing the complaint through the authorized process.
    2. Hiding the complaint to protect a colleague.
    3. Explaining the appropriate employer complaint channel.
    4. Recording the information received without adding facts.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Hiding the complaint to protect a colleague.

The required code prohibits withholding or suppressing complaints and reports about another licensee. Professional loyalty does not justify hiding a complaint.

    Based on: s. 20(2)(g); source checked 2026-10-24

  4. Why are numbered pages and an orderly sequence useful in a work notebook?

    1. They remove the need to identify the notebook’s owner.
    2. They allow the guard to remove pages without explanation.
    3. They make the guard’s personal opinions become evidence of guilt.
    4. They help preserve an identifiable chronological record.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: They help preserve an identifiable chronological record.

An identifiable notebook and orderly entries help show continuity of the record. Numbering is not permission to remove pages or substitute opinion for fact.

  5. The sign-out procedure requires return of a loaned key. A departing worker cannot produce it. What should happen?

    1. Mark the key returned to keep the register balanced.
    2. Give the worker another key and omit both transactions.
    3. Record and report the discrepancy through the site procedure.
    4. Wait for the next shift without telling anyone about the key.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Record and report the discrepancy through the site procedure.

Key-control records should show the actual issue and return status. A missing key is a discrepancy to report, not a reason to falsify the register.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 3, p. 18; source checked 2026-10-24

  6. The guard finishes a voluntary witness interview. Which closing statement is appropriate?

    1. Explain the authorized next step without guaranteeing an outcome.
    2. Tell the witness their answers will certainly stay secret from every investigator.
    3. Ask the witness to make the story match another person’s account.
    4. Promise that the witness’s preferred person will be convicted.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Explain the authorized next step without guaranteeing an outcome.

A professional close thanks the witness and explains what can properly happen next. The guard cannot guarantee a court result, manufacture agreement or make an absolute confidentiality promise that conflicts with lawful reporting.

  7. Who is identified in the property-related arrest branch of section 494(2)?

    1. Any visitor who objects to another visitor’s behaviour.
    2. An owner, lawful possessor or person authorized by either.
    3. Any employee of a neighbouring property, without authorization.
    4. Any licence holder, regardless of a connection to the property.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: An owner, lawful possessor or person authorized by either.

The property branch identifies the owner, person in lawful possession or their authorized person. It also requires finding a criminal offence on or in relation to that property and meeting the timing conditions.

  8. A loss-prevention worker is exempt from routine uniform requirements, but the employer requires a uniform. What follows?

    1. The employer can waive the regulation’s uniform requirements.
    2. The exemption allows any police-style uniform the worker prefers.
    3. The worker may replace required security lettering with any title.
    4. The uniform worn must still comply with the regulation.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: The uniform worn must still comply with the regulation.

Section 22 exempts specified classes, including loss prevention, from the general requirement to wear a uniform. If the employer requires one, section 22(2) says it must comply with section 21.

  9. A licensee changes the address supplied to the Registrar. What is the ordinary reporting deadline under AR 52/2010?

    1. Report the covered change in writing within 30 days.
    2. Wait until the current two-year licence expires.
    3. Report it only if the employer changes as well.
    4. Wait until a member of the public files a complaint.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Report the covered change in writing within 30 days.

Section 3(3) sets a 30-day written reporting period for changes covered by SSIA section 18. Do not confuse this with the 24-hour rule for a lost licence or specified arrests and charges.

  10. What should a guard assume after putting on the required protective equipment?

    1. Other hazards and safe-work procedures still need attention.
    2. The equipment removes the need for communication or assistance.
    3. Any task is permitted even without the required training.
    4. All hazards associated with the task have been eliminated.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Other hazards and safe-work procedures still need attention.

Protective equipment is one part of safe work. It does not remove every hazard, replace training or make the communication and assistance procedures unnecessary.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 7, protective equipment and hazards; source checked 2026-10-24

  11. A task would require fire suppression beyond the guard’s training. What is the appropriate boundary?

    1. Treat equipment nearby as proof that the task is safe to attempt.
    2. Enter alone if the client is worried about property damage.
    3. Attempt the task because every security licence includes firefighter training.
    4. Follow the safe assigned role and obtain trained assistance.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Follow the safe assigned role and obtain trained assistance.

Emergency awareness does not provide firefighting competence. Intervention depends on training, equipment and conditions; follow the site role and obtain qualified assistance rather than exceed those limits.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 6, emergency roles and limits; source checked 2026-10-24

  12. Why use an agreed phonetic alphabet when a radio letter is unclear?

    1. To turn an uncertain observation into a confirmed identity.
    2. To ensure only police officers can understand the message.
    3. To distinguish similar-sounding letters in the message.
    4. To avoid giving a location when requesting assistance.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: To distinguish similar-sounding letters in the message.

An agreed phonetic alphabet improves the clarity of letter transmission. It does not verify an observation, replace necessary details or create special authority.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 5, p. 11; source checked 2026-10-24

  13. Does section 322(2) require someone to leave a store before theft can be complete?

    1. No; holding any unpaid item always proves theft.
    2. Yes; the person must first refuse a request to pay.
    3. No; movement with the required intent can be enough.
    4. Yes; crossing the exterior property line is always required.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: No; movement with the required intent can be enough.

Section 322(2) addresses moving or beginning to move property with intent to steal. An exterior exit is not a statutory prerequisite, but the required elements still matter; simply holding merchandise does not prove theft.

Based on: Criminal Code, s. 322(2); source checked 2026-10-24

  14. A client says no incident has occurred for years. What does that establish about today’s task?

    1. The guard may skip the site’s check-in requirements.
    2. Past history alone does not establish current safety.
    3. There can be no hazard until the first injury occurs.
    4. Equipment defects no longer need to be reported.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Past history alone does not establish current safety.

A quiet history does not eliminate current hazards. Conditions, equipment and activities still need assessment, and the required communication and reporting arrangements remain relevant.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 7, ongoing safety assessment; source checked 2026-10-24

  15. A client says section 494(2)(b) allows arrest at any later date. What has the client omitted?

    1. Only the business’s preferred uniform colour.
    2. A requirement that every later arrest occur at closing time.
    3. The reasonable-time and police-feasibility conditions.
    4. Only whether the person still shops at the property.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: The reasonable-time and police-feasibility conditions.

Section 494(2)(b) does not authorize arrest at any unlimited later date. Both reasonable timing and reasonable grounds about the feasibility of police arrest must be assessed along with the other statutory conditions.

Based on: Criminal Code, s. 494(2)(b); source checked 2026-10-24

  16. Ice has formed on the normal outdoor route. What should determine the next action?

    1. The changed surface hazard and the site’s safe controls.
    2. A preference to avoid adding another entry to the hazard report.
    3. Only the fact that the route was safe yesterday.
    4. Only whether the next patrol is already overdue.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: The changed surface hazard and the site’s safe controls.

A route must be assessed in its present condition. Ice can change the risk even on a familiar path, so report it and follow the safe controls and instructions for the task.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 7, patrol hazards; source checked 2026-10-24

  17. Before a voluntary witness interview, what should the guard do?

    1. Ask permission and explain the information-gathering purpose.
    2. Promise a particular court result in exchange for cooperation.
    3. Announce that every witness must answer the guard’s questions.
    4. Begin by accusing the witness of causing the incident.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Ask permission and explain the information-gathering purpose.

A security interview is a respectful information-gathering exchange. The manual directs the guard to ask permission and explain the purpose, without pretending to be a police investigator.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 4, p. 16; source checked 2026-10-24

  18. A visitor is authorized for a meeting room but asks to enter a restricted records room. What should the guard check?

    1. Whether the visitor arrived during normal business hours.
    2. Authorization for that particular restricted area.
    3. Whether another visitor is willing to open the records room.
    4. Whether the visitor has already entered any part of the building.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Authorization for that particular restricted area.

Access can differ by person and location. Authorization to enter one area does not establish permission for a separate restricted room.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 3, pp. 17–18; source checked 2026-10-24

  19. A site has had several false alarms. What is the soundest approach to a new activation?

    1. Wait for a second unrelated alarm before taking any action.
    2. Disconnect the system for the rest of the shift.
    3. Record it as false without checking the circumstances.
    4. Assess it under the current response procedure.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Assess it under the current response procedure.

Previous false activations do not establish the cause of the current event. Follow the response procedure, consider immediate danger and document the actual information available.

  20. A person presents an access card with a photograph. What is an important part of checking it?

    1. Assume every card grants access to all locked rooms.
    2. Accept it without checking because the person is polite.
    3. Accept it whenever its colour matches other staff cards.
    4. Compare the photograph with the person presenting it.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Compare the photograph with the person presenting it.

A credential must relate to the person and the requested access. Familiar card design or polite behaviour is not a substitute for the required identity and authorization checks.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 3, p. 18; source checked 2026-10-24

  21. A guard heard a person make a statement but did not see the underlying event. Which distinction must the record preserve?

    1. Every statement heard must automatically be treated as proved true.
    2. The guard may record the event as personally seen if the speaker seemed honest.
    3. Hearing the statement differs from witnessing the event.
    4. Every reported statement is automatically inadmissible in every court.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Hearing the statement differs from witnessing the event.

Record what the guard actually perceived and identify the statement’s source. Court admissibility depends on context; this practice question does not decide it by a blanket rule.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 5, pp. 4, 20; source checked 2026-10-24

  22. What is one useful feature of foot patrol in a suitable location?

    1. Freedom to stop watching for approaching vehicles.
    2. Permission to leave communication equipment at the desk.
    3. Closer observation of details and contact with site users.
    4. A guarantee that every hidden hazard will be detected.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Closer observation of details and contact with site users.

Foot patrol can support detailed observation and contact with people at the site. It does not remove traffic hazards, equipment needs or the limits of observation.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 3, pp. 13–14; source checked 2026-10-24

  23. Which practice helps confirm that an important direction was understood?

    1. Assume a nod always proves complete understanding.
    2. Repeat the message faster so the exchange ends sooner.
    3. Respectfully ask the person to explain the next step.
    4. Use extra jargon to test the listener’s confidence.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Respectfully ask the person to explain the next step.

Checking understanding can reveal a misunderstanding before it causes a problem. A nod alone does not always establish that the person understood the actual direction.

Based on: ABST Participant Manual (third edition, 2014), Module 4, pp. 11–12; source checked 2026-10-24

  24. A guard remembers an additional detail several hours after an incident. What should the entry show?

    1. A new detail inserted secretly into an old blank space.
    2. An earlier writing time so the notes appear simultaneous.
    3. A changed event time that matches when the guard remembered.
    4. The real entry time and its relation to the earlier event.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: The real entry time and its relation to the earlier event.

A later addition must not be disguised as a contemporaneous entry. Distinguish when the event occurred from when the extra information was actually recorded.
