The VSA annual report’s p.6 key-metrics panel reports 9,073 salesperson licences at 2025/26 year-end. Its 1,721 dealer licences are a separate category. Licence records are not the number of current vacancies, full-time workers or newly hired salespeople. The period differs from OMVIC’s 2025 reporting year.

The work and the registration

This pathway concerns an individual selling vehicles to retail consumers through a licensed BC motor dealer. Dealer/business licensing, wholesaler roles and broker-agent representative categories have their own rules. The VSA requires verified dealership employment before issuing the salesperson licence, even though you may apply before being hired.

What the employment evidence means

For NOC 64100, Job Bank gives BC a Limited 2025–2027 outlook. Lower Mainland–Southwest is Limited, while Thompson–Okanagan and Vancouver Island and Coast are Moderate. These assessments cover broad retail employment; they do not establish that a licensed car salesperson will find work in a particular region.

Your application checklist

Steps checked: 0/4

  1. The ordinary licence route requires age 19+, legal eligibility to work in Canada and a Police Information Check. A criminal record is assessed for relevance and is not an automatic exclusion. Ask VSA about your circumstances.

  2. Use the VSA application instructions and provide the required documents and fees. You can apply before finding a job, but the licence will not be issued until employment with a licensed motor dealer is verified. Do not treat a submitted application as authority to sell.

  3. After the application is processed, VSA enrols the applicant in its self-study online course and emails access information separately. Complete the coursework and supervised exam before the expiry shown on the conditional licence, if one is issued.

  4. Confirm that you hold the appropriate valid licence before selling and follow its conditions. The course has assessed assignments and an exam; a free practice score does not replace either. Review renewal and employer-change requirements with VSA.

These checks are a personal reminder on this page. They are not saved, sent or proof of eligibility.

Moving to BC from another province

Do not assume that OMVIC registration transfers into a VSA licence. Start with the VSA individual application and ask Licensing which evidence of prior training or registration it accepts. The BC employer-verification and licence conditions still need confirmation for your application.

Questions before you apply

Can I apply before a dealership hires me?

Yes, VSA says an application can be made before employment. However, the salesperson licence is not issued until employment at a licensed dealership is verified. Applying, taking a course and being authorized to sell are separate states.

Does the CA$18.72 median describe licensed BC car salespeople only?

No. Job Bank’s estimate covers the broad retail group NOC 64100 and its stated 2023–2024 reference period. It is gross hourly pay, not a prediction of dealership commission income. The Labour Force Survey definition includes commissions, tips and bonuses.

Is our mock-test score the VSA course pass mark?

No. The official course combines assessed coursework and a supervised exam, with its own grading rules. Our original practice is unofficial and not licensed-reviewed; it does not satisfy the course or licensing requirements.

Definitions, dates and limits

  • Registration is permission to carry on regulated work, not evidence of a current job. OMVIC’s 2025 panel reports registered salespersons; the VSA reports salesperson licences at 2025/26 fiscal year-end. Dates and regulatory coverage differ. New applications, renewals and licensed dealerships are separate measures.
  • Job Bank groups automobile salespersons within NOC 64100, Retail salespersons and visual merchandisers. Both the hourly medians and employment outlooks cover that broad group, not just car sales or OMVIC/VSA registrants. No car-sales-only official wage or outlook is inferred from these figures.
  • Wages are gross CAD per hour, based on the 2023–2024 LFS reference period; the annual Job Bank wage release is dated 19 November 2025. Job Bank also adjusts published wages for minimum-wage increases. The displayed estimate is not an unadjusted historical wage, an entry offer or take-home pay.
  • Statistics Canada says LFS wages include tips, commissions and bonuses and exclude self-employment. It would be wrong to label these figures “base pay excluding commission”. A particular dealership’s base salary, draw, commission formula, clawbacks and hours still need a written explanation from the employer.
  • The 2025–2027 outlooks were released on 10 December 2025. “Limited” is an occupational-group assessment, not a personal hiring probability. No real-time vacancy count or employment-to-registration ratio is published here. Job Bank links can include broad retail roles: read each employer’s duties and industry.
