IRCC bases the test on Discover Canada and provides the guide free in several formats, including online text, PDF and audio. Use the format that helps you follow the material, and return to the text when you need to check a detail.

For each session, read the relevant guide material before opening a quiz. Mark unfamiliar terms and relationships rather than trying to memorize only the answer choices.
| Session | Reading and practice focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Rights, responsibilities, the Oath and who Canadians are |
| 2 | New France, Confederation and the Dominion’s development |
| 3 | Modern Canada, cultural achievements, arts and science |
| 4 | Government, elections and the justice system |
| 5 | Symbols, honours and holidays |
| 6 | The economy, provinces, territories and regions |
| 7 | Mixed timed practice, explanation review and a return to weak topics |
What a useful session looks like
First, read a manageable part of the guide without a timer. Then close it and explain the main idea in your own words. If you cannot explain a relationship, such as the roles of different levels of government, reread that section before increasing the number of quiz questions.
After practice, review both wrong answers and correct guesses. A guessed answer can hide a gap. Write one short explanation that would still make sense if the options were rearranged. Revisit that note at the start of the next session.
Keep an error log you can act on
| What happened | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| Mixed up a name or date | Build a short sequence and place the event in context. |
| Confused institutions | Compare who does what, rather than repeating the same question. |
| Missed a regional fact | Find the province or territory on a map and connect the fact to it. |
| Guessed correctly | Explain why the other options do not fit before counting it as understood. |
Use the final session to choose what to revisit
Take a mixed timed practice when you can give it your attention. The purpose is to notice which topics and reading habits need more work. If a pattern of mistakes remains, add another session for that topic rather than racing through more full tests.
Keep logistics separate from learning. Read your invitation and the online-test checklist before the actual sitting. Finish your preparation with the official guide, not with a claim that a particular practice percentage or number of sessions guarantees a pass.
